Legendary musician Phil Collins is in the hospital, although a mix-up on the reason as to why has created a whirlwind online. When his most recent hospitalization was first being discussed, the "reports" assumed that he was in hospice receiving end-of-life care. This would have been truly devastating, considering the icons that have recently passed.

Fortunately, the initial chatter was overblown. A spokesperson for Collins confirmed on July 26 that the rumors of something life-threatening were "completely incorrect." As it turns out, Phil Collins was actually admitted to undergo a knee surgery and a full recovery is in his sights.

In February, Phil Collins sat down with Mojo Magazine for an interview that gave some clarity on where the 73-year-old icon was in terms of his desire to continue his musical pursuits. he said:

“I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore.”

He continued:

“The thing is, I’ve been sick. I mean very sick.”

In 2024, the documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First was released, giving his fans a look behind the scenes of his musical journey. It also encapsulated his heartbreaking inability to continue playing the drums, which was his biggest passion and first musical love. He said:

“It’s still kind of sinking in a bit. I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.”

Collins last played drums on stage in 2022 when his band Genesis went on their final tour. He went on to add:

“If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it. But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.”

Phil Collins attributed the wear and tear of six decades of playing to the reason he’s now being forced into retirement.

Throughout his storied career, Collins has amassed almost every accolade imaginable for a creative in his space. He has won eight Grammy awards, two Golden Globes, four Billboard Awards, as well as an Academy Award to top it off. It is a true relief that his condition is less volatile than expected.
