Gracie Abrams is getting real about what it's like to make music with one of her idols.
In a new Vogue España cover story, published Monday, the 26-year-old indie pop star opened up about collaborating with Taylor Swift. As it was unusual for The Life of a Showgirl songstress to feature on other artists' songs, Gracie Abrams recounted the experience, describing it as both surreal and personal.
“It’s funny because I feel like I’ve known Taylor my whole life, even before we actually met. I grew up with her songs; she’s soundtracked important moments in our lives, so her voice has always been very present and I was already learning from her since her music came into my world.”
The "Close to You" songstress explained that she and Taylor Swift connected through their mutual collaborator, producer Aaron Dressner, whom she considers "like family." Abrams noted that Dressner had worked on Swift's critically acclaimed album, folklore, and around that time, the two artists began talking after Swift returned from tour, and they went out to dinner.
"We caught up and ended up going back to her house to listen to whatever albums we were working on at the time. She was in the middle of The Tortured Poets Department [2024], and I was in the middle of The Secret of Us . We started jamming and, half-drunk, wrote the whole song. And that's the story. It was hilarious."
"Whatever you want to say, go for it": Gracie Abrams on her music being labeled as "bedroom pop"
In the same interview, Gracie Abrams was asked about her thoughts on her music being categorized as "sad girl pop" and "bedroom pop." But for the singer, she's "fine with it."
"I think it's understandable considering I started posting videos of my songs from my bedroom [she says ironically]. It seems like a very easy label to assign."
She continued:
"I'm increasingly finding artists who have turned their small spaces into sanctuaries to create songs that bring them closer to themselves and others (in fact, I still do). But when I make music, I'm not worried about meeting people's expectations or not. So I'm fine with it: whatever you want to say, go for it."
As Gracie Abrams continues to flourish, now with multiple Grammy nominations under her belt, she remains optimistic about her future. She shared with the magazine her different desires for her future, whether to branch out her career or withdraw from her life in the city.
"I like being 26. I don't want to have kids tomorrow, but I do want to start a family someday. I want to score a movie, write a play. I want to record albums every time there's a chapter in my life where I feel I have something new to say."
The "That's So True" singer added:
"I want to disappear for a while. I want to live away from the city. I want to go back to college someday. I want to be available for whatever my friends need. I want all those things, yes."
