R&B singer Kehlani has finally addressed her fans about her new song, "Folded," as they kept theorizing whether the song was a breakup or a love song in her latest video. She said:
"It’s time to get lyrically grown.”
as she explained in the video.
Kehlani started with:
"Let's start with the meaning of Folded. I never said it was a freaky song."
As she points towards the camera and grins, she says:
"Y'all made it a freaky song. And you're so used to me being freaky, maybe you just thought that was my only bag, but I'm 30 now, we got to grow up someday. So it's time to get lyrically grown.”
Kehlani claims it is a double entendre about folding up someone's clothes that they left at your house, as you still care enough to fold the clothes for them, but you are still mad at them, but you cared enough to fold them. She continues saying:
"Cause the situations not dead as in I know it's getting cold out but tell me it's not frozen, like it's not iced out, it's not done. So come get your sh*t and I might be in your little cute outfit waiting for you at the door, because give me one more try."
She then points to the camera and continues:
"Then I'll let your body decide if this is good enough for you, not this."
As Kehlani points above, she then adds
"But this...this love...this situation. 'Cause when you get here, we're gonna hunch, 'cause that's a part of my plan. And then you can decide if it is worth fixing and saving, cause the f*ck around and find out hunch is sometimes the deciding factor."
She concluded with:
"It's not really a if you're mature, but when I was younger, it would have been a deciding factor. We've all been there, I think, but it's that I hate that I love you. Come back, this is kinda wrong, but the only way that we find out is if we find that out."
Folded, which was released on June 13, 2025, was Kehlani's first solo release since her 2024 mixtape While We Wait 2. Produced by Khris Riddick-Tynes, Andre Harris, Donovan Knight, and Don Mills, the song combines longing melodies, soulful guitar loops, and metaphorical lyrics.
While the story focuses on folding clothes left behind by an ex, Khelani brings in double meanings, as sometimes it's tender and sensual. As the post-chorus goes:
"I'll let your body decide if this is good enough for you/ Already folding it for you/ Already folding up for you/ I'll let your body decide if this is good enough for you."
The lyrics go on to show how much Kehlani misses the ex who left their clothes. Like the lines in verse 2:
“I know it’s getting cold out, but it’s not frozen,” and, “I don’t need roses / Just need some flowers from my garden / Can’t you go back to how you loved on me when you started?”
Showing that everything's not over yet and wishes things went the other way.
Kehlani's philanthropic gesture
The R&B singer announced on Instagram last week, on Thursday (August 8), that she would be providing free laundry services to mothers and others as a thank you for all of the support she has received for her new song. On Saturday (August 9), Kehlani will collaborate with seven different laundromats in seven big cities for a thoughtful "give back." Some of these cities are Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.
As she announced this on Instagram, she wrote:
“Growing up i knew how hard it was for all the single mamas in my family to get the tasks done on top of it all. clean clothes is a basic necessity. i got yall. Thank you @engagecurrent for sponsoring this initiative, and my brother @city.james for such an incredible idea. AS A THANK YOU FOR SENDING THIS SONG OVER THE MOON! i love you mommy’s. you deserve the world.”
Hope it's all clear for all the fans now. Despite what the song meant, we can agree that it's a banger, as a fan tweeted:
"Is folded a breakup or love song lol? I be jamming either way."
