Jennifer Hudson is set to headline the Whitney Houston Legacy of Love Gala.
Jennifer Hudson, American actress, singer, and show host, will be performing at Whitney Houston's Legacy of Love Gala, celebrating 40 Years of the icon's stellar career.
The performance, which will take place at the St. Regis Hotel in Atlanta on August 9, will be the 4th annual edition and mark the late singer's 62nd birthday. The celebration comes 40 years after the beginning of Houston's career as her self-titled debut album was released in 1985.
One of the purposes of the Legacy of Love gala is to benefit the late singer’s foundation. Whitney Houston Foundation for Children was founded in 1989 by her to empower youth, provide resources to unhoused children, give out college scholarships, and raise funds for charities like the Children’s Defense Fund and St. Jude Children’s Research.
The Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation is run by Pat Houston, who is her sister-in-law and the executor of her estate. In a statement about the upcoming event and Whitney's contributions, Pat said,
“We are delighted how the foundation has developed and expanded over the past four years. Though Whitney is known worldwide for her exemplary talent in music and entertainment, one of the things she loved more than anything was supporting children and our youth. "
"She always reached back to various communities globally and truly demonstrated the work of a global servant and lived by the adage — ‘I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way; show them all the beauty they possess inside, give them a sense of pride to make it easier…’ — from her international anthem, ‘Greatest Love of All.’”
The Legacy of Love Gala
The Legacy of Love Gala will be hosted by Pat, along with Kevin Frazier of Entertainment Tonight. In a press statement, Houston expressed,
“We are excited to have Jennifer Hudson as our headlining performer and special guest. We are thrilled that she is able to take the time to spend Whitney’s 40th anniversary with us and our special guests. And more importantly, she continues to support Whitney’s legacy.”
Besides Jennifer Hudson, R&B singer and songwriter Meli'sa Morgan, who sang on Houston’s self-titled debut album, will also be performing. The event will also bear witness to performances by the winner of The Legacy Foundation’s second annual Cover Song Competition, Jimmy Vance, and a special performance by a symphony orchestra, The Voice of Whitney: A Symphonic Celebration, conducted by William R. Langley.
