Katy Perry is doing her part to rectify a legal situation that has now been affecting her since 2020. The Roar singer appeared in a Los Angeles court via Zoom on August 26, to attend proceedings tied to her purchase of a multi-million dollar Montecito, California estate in August 2020.
According to official documents obtained by People, Katy Perry and her then-partner Orlando Bloom purchased the residence from entrepreneur Carl Westcott for a fee of $15 million. Westcott subsequently sought to rescind the deal, citing a genetic brain disorder named Huntington’s Disease as evidence that he “lacked capacity" to honor the transaction. The entrepreneur also filed suit against Perry’s business manager Bernie Gudvi in August 2020.
After a prolonged legal battle, Perry finally gained ownership of the home in May 2024, four years after it had been initially purchased. The judge presiding over the case declared,
“Westcott presented no persuasive evidence that he lacked capacity to enter into a real estate contract.”
Interestingly, Katy Perry is seeking more than $5 million in damages, with the bulk of the amount representing losses of potential rental income.
When questioned by attoneys in court about the reason for her continued litigation, Perry gave a one word reply,
“Justice.”
Katy Perry has faced real estate woes in the past, too
Interestingly, this is not Katy Perry’s first experience with a lucrative real estate deal landing her in the middle of a legal dispute. As per The Hollywood Reporter, she made an agreement to purchase an 8.5 acre property in Los Angeles for $14.5 million. The process was formerly a Los Feliz convent and Perry made the deal with the local Archdiocese.
In response, Dana Hollister, a Silver Lake California businesswoman, engaged several of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, who were given proprietorship of the home by the former owners in 1971, to make a deal with her instead. Ultimately, after a gruelling period of litigation that spanned three years, Katy Perry and the Archdiocese won the case, although there remain some obstacles in Perry’s path to full ownership.
In other news, Katy Perry is also on verge of closing out the US shows for her The Lifetimes Tour. Her final performance took place at the Kaseya Center in Miami, and she brought an explosive energy to the fold in front of a sold out crowd. Although she has had some mishaps along the way on the American leg of her tour, including a viral wardrobe mishap, she closed it out strong as she gears up for her dates in South America.
Perry’s next show is scheduled for September 6 in Santiago, Chile. The pop star will later to the United Kingdom and then to Europe October onwards.
