Neil Diamond’s surprise sing-along moment at A Beautiful Noise brought the audience at Los Angeles’ Pantages Theater to their feet over the weekend.
Although he has stepped away from touring live since 2018 due to his Parkinson's disease diagnosis, the 83-year-old music icon stunned fans at the musical The Neil Diamond Musical: A Beautiful Noise. The scene was also caught on camera and posted on the production's official Instagram account.
As Diamond strode out and warbled "Sweet Caroline" to the audience, the audience also stood up to belt his 1969 classic hit along with him.
The Broadway-style production follows Neil Diamond from Brooklyn with the dream of becoming a rock music legend. Described as a “musical memoir,” it features the highs and lows of his decades-spanning career.
In a 2023 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Diamond spoke candidly about his Parkinson’s diagnosis.
“This is what I have to accept. And I’m willing to do it. This is the hand that God’s given me, and I have to make the best of it, and so I am. I am.”
He went on:
“A calm has moved in.”
Neil Diamond to receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Carousel Ball for impact and inspiration
Neil Diamond’s impromptu “Sweet Caroline” performance comes just days after he has been announced to be honored at the 39th annual Carousel Ball, taking place October 11 at the Hyatt Regency in Denver.
In a statement, the singer-songwriter expressed his gratitude:
“It’s been my absolute joy to have supported the Children’s Diabetes Foundation for so many wonderful years.”
He went on:
“Barbara Davis and her organization have done an immense amount of good helping kids, adults and their families facing a difficult diagnosis.”
Neil Diamond, whose four-decade career discography includes "Forever in Blue Jeans" and "September Morn," will be honored for his musical legacy and impact. The recognition follows his surprise sing-along of "Sweet Caroline" in Los Angeles, a momentary re-entry into the public eye after his 2018 retirement.
The gala, meanwhile, has a long-standing reputation for drawing A-list performers, as past honorees have included Celine Dion, Sir Elton John, and Whitney Houston.
This year, the Goo Goo Dolls will take the stage as musical guests. Known for their chart-topping tracks like “Iris” and “Slide,” the band expressed their excitement about performing in honor of the legendary crooner while supporting the Children’s Diabetes Foundation.
In a joint statement, John Rzeznik and Robby Takac said:
“We’re excited to take the stage at The Carousel Ball and support an amazing cause. The progress the Children’s Diabetes Foundation has made in diabetes research and patient care has brought new hope to countless families and we’re honored to be a part of their special night.”
