The father of American singer-songwriter and rapper Montero Lamar Hill, commonly known as Lil Nas X, Robert Stafford, in a recent interview with The Sunday Times, opened up about his son, who was in prison in Los Angeles. The 56-year-old Stafford, who was emotional during the interview, discussed his son, Lil Nas X's, legal troubles.
As per People, Lil Nas X, who gained mainstream fame in 2018 after releasing the country rap song Old Town Road, which became a massive hit, was arrested in Los Angeles on August 21, 2025, after allegedly assaulting a police officer. The Industry Baby singer was charged with a misdemeanor, as he was accused of assaulting a police officer.
While Lil Nas X was released from prison on August 25, 2025, the Sun Goes Down singer pleaded not guilty to four felony charges. On the day of his arrest, he was caught on camera roaming around in his underpants. He was taken to a hospital later that day due to a reported overdose. Nas X has to appear for a preliminary hearing on September 15, 2025. He could face five years in jail if he is convicted. His father, Robert Stafford, who visited him in prison, said during the interview:
“I went to visit him in jail and as soon as I walked through that door, I couldn’t do anything but cry."
He continued:
"To see my baby boy on the other side of that glass. We shed tears with each other for a minute."
As Stafford lives in Atlanta, he had to take a flight to Los Angeles to meet his son. To make his son feel a little better, Stafford told Lil Nas X:
"What you’re going through is normal. We all have breakdowns every now and then, but the difference is, yours get played out in the public eye"
Stafford went ahead and shared with The Sunday Times:
"When I went to visit, he asked me to say, ‘Tell everybody I’m sorry they saw me like that. Even in that moment, he was apologizing to people for something he was going through."
Robert Stafford hopes that his son, Lil Nas X, will make positive personal changes

After Lil Nas X's release from prison, his father, Robert Stafford, has hopes about his son, as he thinks that he will recover and will make positive personal changes in his life. Stafford said:
"Hopefully, this is a turning point in his mental stability. Sometimes God will take you through your worst moment to give you your best moment."
Following his release from prison, Nas X took to social media on August 26, 2025, and in an Instagram Story said:
"Your girl is gonna be okay, boo. Okay? S---’s gonna be alright... That was f---ing terrifying ... a terrifying last four days. But your girl is gonna be alright."
