New Zealand singer-songwriter, Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, commonly known by her stage name Lorde, whose brand-new album Virgin drops on June 27, 2025, received an unexpected go-ahead from rapper Jack Harlow while working on the album. The 28-year-old Lorde, in an interview with Apple Music, opened up to New Zealand DJ Zane Lowe about her creative process and the inspiration behind Virgin.
The "Supercut" singer, during her conversation with Zane Lowe, revealed an interesting moment she had with the 27-year-old rapper, Jack Harlow. She said:
"Jack Harlow was working at Electric Lady when we were there towards the end of the record and somehow ended up getting most of the album played to him. It was a very funny cool link."
Lorde went ahead and said:
"He's (Jack Harlow) such a sweetheart. He was like, 'Your bars – these are bars.' I was like, 'Your words, not mine.'"
She further discussed her new album and added:
"There just is this sort of like rolling cadence and physicality. Within that, I'm trying to make myself laugh, I'm trying to make my eyebrow raise, I'm trying to kind of, I don't know, just keep it feeling super alive."
Lorde, who is widely popular for her distinct style of pop music and self-examining songwriting, rose to prominence internationally in 2013 with her first album, Pure Heroine. Not to mention, her hit single "Royals" also helped her gain major recognition as it ranked in first position on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The "Team" hitmaker, who is often referred to as the "Queen of Alternative," received commercial as well as critical success with her second studio album, Melodrama, on which she collaborated with Jack Antonoff, a renowned record producer and songwriter. While the album was an absolute success in every manner, it also ranked in Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list.
Lorde's new album Virgin, partially explores her gender identity journey

Lorde's brand-new album, Virgin, which happens to be her fourth studio album, will partially explore her gender identity journey. Previously, in a Rolling Stone interview, the "Solar Power" singer mentioned a conversation she had with Chappell Roan regarding her gender. The Tennis Court singer said:
"She (Chappell Roan) was like, ‘So, are you nonbinary now?’ And I was like, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.’ I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but there’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up."
