What was once one of the most talked-about silent feuds between MARINA and Charli xcx in indie-pop Tumblr history seems to have reached a peaceful resolution. Seventeen singer has publicly acknowledged her support for Charli xcx and her critically acclaimed album Brat, ending speculation over lingering tension between the two artists.
In her exclusive interview with Rolling Stone, the Welsh singer referred to the message she sent Charli last summer, saying:
“I think these moments are important. It was sweet to see people respond to that. I love her work and it’s so inspiring to see what she did with Brat. She just fully deserves it.”
Their falling out dates back to 2015, when Marina Diamandis, also known professionally as MARINA, posted a pointed comment on social media in response to a Charli xcx photoshoot that resembled the visuals for her single Immortal.
At the time, the Primadonna songstress wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“Imagery is artistic property. Please respect your fellow artists.”
Charli then responded shortly after, writing:
“You know what, sometimes you do a photoshoot standing in front of a plant, sometimes you do a photoshoot in black and white, sometimes you wear purple eyeshadow.”
The Boom Clap singer went on:
“Sometimes you shoot with the same photographer a fellow artist has shot with. That’s just how things happen in the industry I work in.”
MARINA reveals Charli xcx’s “Girl, so confusing” made her tear up
The tension between the two persisted quietly over the years, even as Charli xcx confirmed in 2023 that they still didn’t follow each other on her private Instagram.
At the time, Charli clarified there was “no negativity” anymore and that “our worlds just don’t cross.”
But that distance appears to have softened into mutual respect. According to the Seventeen hitmaker, Charli’s track Girl, so confusing (featuring Lorde) left a strong impression and moved her to tears.
Before the fallout, the pair collaborated on Just Desserts in 2013. Though the track was never officially released, it remains live on both of their YouTube channels.
Charli’s Brat era has since become a full-blown cultural moment, earning a remix album, a Brat Summer, sold-out arena dates, and a trio of Grammy wins. The singer also recently headlined the Primavera Sound, the much-anticipated music festival in Spain.
Meanwhile, MARINA has released her sixth studio album, PRINCESS OF POWER, her first full-length project since 2021’s Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land.
