A fascinating piece of Michael Jackson memorabilia has just fetched an astonishing price at auction. As per reports, a Rhinestone-laden sock from the pop icon’s 1997 HIStory tour has sold at a Nîmes, France auction house for a sum of $8,822.

The famous sock was recovered backstage by a technician working at his performance in Nîmes. Michael Jackson had discarded the sock near his dressing room, so the technician decided to collect it and frame it alongside his backstage pass for the affair.

According to French auctioneer Aurore Illy, the item ended up selling for significantly more than expected.

“It really is an exceptional object — even a cult one for Michael Jackson fans.”

Even though the object has worn over time, it still has legitimate value to some people out there, which speaks to Michael's impact.

Michael Jackson's highest-selling career memorabilia

Michael Jackson's memorabilia has been known to fetch outrageous prices at auction houses, especially after his demise. Now, almost 15 years later, the demand has not waned.

Among the most iconic of them all, however, one item truly sets itself apart - the infamous jacket from the "Thriller" music video. The red and black leather piece may be one of the most recognizable fits of all time, and it was eventually auctioned off at Julien’s in 2011. While the early estimates projected Michael Jackson's jacket going for far less, according to reports, it sold for more than $1.8 million, according to figures from Cllt.

Also deserving an honorable mention is a piece that saw the coming together of arguably the two biggest American artists of the era from their respective fields. To commemorate the sales of Michael Jackson's "Thriller", a portrait of him by Andy Warhol was commissioned in 1984. According to reports from Cllt, the painting first sold for around a quarter of a million dollars in 2009. Some months after the musician's death, it is said to have sold at a private auction for over a million dollars.

This is also not the first time Michael Jackson's worn socks have sold for a steep price, either. In 1984, he starred in Pepsi's “New Generation” ad campaign in which he wore custom-made, crystal-covered socks. According to Cllt, the pair of socks, also accompanied by a letter signed by Michael Jackson, sold at Heritage in November 2019, for $21,250
