Rapper and singer Playboi Carti recently performed in his hometown of Atlanta. On August 22, X account Kurrco shared a clip from his performance, in which the Carti rapped the lyrics,

“Atlanta, the home of hip-hop. I'm standing on that.”

Some social media users appeared pleased at what he said, while others had different opinions. One X user highlighted the diversity of music, writing:

“music has never been regional and anyone who thinks so is not a creative.”

Similarly, another platform user mentioned how the singers upheld their hometowns. They wrote:

“I’m glad rappers are making a homebase, but we all know the king of the west is Dot.”

A netizen commented on Playboi Carti’s mic, while mentioning that the home of rap is New York. The comment read:

“The auto tune on Carti’s mic every time he talk always fries me NEW YORK is the home of hip-hop, but we ofc love Atlanta rappers.”

Another user also shared similar sentiments, writing:

“id argue its new york but atlanta 100% pushed hip hop far and gave us some of the most influential and versatile hip hop artists.”

Netizens tried to quash the debate between New York vs Atlanta as the home of rap, as one user commented:

“There’s a lotta cap in these comments bro NY mighta been the birthplace but it hasn’t been HipHop’s home in yrs; Carti is right, Atlanta & the South is hiphop’s home.”

Another user brought up Chicago in the debate while also agreeing with what Playboi Carti said. They mentioned:

“NYC the home of hip hop….but the last 20-25 years Atlanta has absolutely been the dominant city in the genre. I’d even argue Chicago been more influential than NYC in that span.”

Playboi Carti looks back on the importance of dressing and his work with other rappers

In a 2021 interview with Crack Magazine, it was mentioned that Playboi Carti shifted from Atlanta to the Bronx after he changed his name. He explained that dressing well was important because it helped him feel good, and when he felt good, everything else worked better.

Carti also stated that as he got older, he thought more about his legacy, how he wanted to be remembered, and wanted people to see him as someone different. He stated,

"The way I just want to be remembered on this earth is: I was different. I just want to be remembered for the things I started."

He believed that artists who dared to change things and step outside the usual way deserved appreciation. Even if people did not accept it right away, Playboi Carti felt proud of starting something new and wanted to be remembered for creating his path. Speaking about working with Kanye West and Matthew Williams in the past, he said:

“This thing where I felt like Ye is the older me, I look at Matt as the older me, and he looks at me as a younger him. It’s a blessing to have someone like that in my corner. The opportunities that he has opened for me, there’s nothing I could repay him with.”

According to him, even though he would always love music, he wanted to try other things too. While people were paying attention to him, Playboi Carti said he wanted to show the world everything he could do. He wanted to make the most of his opportunities, and when the time came to rest, he would be ready for it.
