"Rigged": Internet divided as Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Short n’ Sweet’ bags the ‘Album of the Year’ award at the 2025 MTV VMAs

Sabrina Carpenter has bagged her second 2025 VMAs Moon Person trophy for the 'Album of the Year' award for her album Short n’ Sweet. Ahead of her victory, Carpenter performed her latest song, Tears, at the September 7 ceremony at UBS Arena.

The artist walked into the ceremony with eight nominations and took three trophies home. She also won the award for the 'Best Pop Artist' and the 'Best Visual Effects' award for her song Manchild.

For the 'Album of the Year' award, Sabrina Carpenter competed with Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, Lady Gaga, Morgan Wallen, and The Weeknd. However, some on the internet raised eyebrows at Sabrina's Short n’ Sweet victory, with one writing,

"Rigged."

Released in August last year, Short n’ Sweet is considered her breakthrough album. The artist lifted the Moon Person trophy at the VMAs for her album. Many users praised the artist for her achievement. At the same time, other online users didn't seem to agree with MTV. A fan added, called out the recognition and wrote,

"She wins Best Album while legends with real discographies get ignored, clown show."

Another netizen mocked the VMAs and questioned the process to decide winners.

"At this point, VMAs just spinning a wheel backstage to pick winners."

Fans of other artists also felt the award should be given to their favorite artist. One of Lady Gaga's fans wrote,

"Mayhem deserved it so much."

Despite some criticism, many fans of Sabrina Carpenter showered their congratulations on the artist for her major win. While praising the singer, a fan called Short n’ Sweet a "standout project."

"What an incredible win for Sabrina! 'Short n' Sweet' has been such a standout project and this recognition proves her evolution into a serious pop powerhouse."

Another netizen called Carpenter the current queen of pop and added that the album deserved to win.

"Best Album well deserved 👏 queen of pop right now."

Another user penned that this victory has cemented Carpenter's place among top performers.

What did Sabrina Carpenter say in her winning speech at VMAs 2025?

The Manchild artist, while receiving her Moon Person, thanked her fans and said she didn't take fans for granted.

“This world, as we all know, can be so full of criticism and discrimination and negativity. So to get to be part of something that can bring light, make you smile, make you dance, and make you feel like the world is your f***ing oyster. I’m so grateful to do that... I really don’t take for granted when you guys take the time out of your lives to listen to an album," Sabrina Carpenter said.

Carpenter recently released her seventh studio album, Man's Best Friend, on August 29.
