English singer Adele's second album, 21, has been certified 17x Platinum in the US. It now emerges as the highest-certified album released in the 21st century so far. The certification was awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on September 30. For context, one Platinum certification represents one million album sales. Adele’s 21, released in 2011, has now sold 17 million copies.
Earlier in 2021, the multi-Grammy-winning singer became the UK's best-selling female artist of this century. The Skyfall singer was also named the best-selling artist of the 2010s decade in the U.S. and worldwide. Now, the singer’s sophomore studio album has earned 17X Platinum certification, underscoring its enduring popularity.
As the success statistics surfaced on the internet, many netizens expressed their thoughts on it. While many netizens praised the singer for record-breaking sales, others raised questions about the timing of the certification, as it comes a day before Taylor Swift's album release. An X user said that the singer could have updated her sales number before, but she chose to do it after Taylor Swift updated the sales of her 1989, ahead of her album release.
"She is a such flop now that she feels so threatened. like hagele you had whole summer to update your certification but your jealous 4s$ choose to do it now."

A user alleged that the Rolling in the Deep singer applied for certification after Taylor Swift updated her album sales.
"Adele saw taylor and had to act fast."
Another user echoed a similar thought.
"Right after taylor updated her certifications and 1989 matching 21 in certification? It's giving insecure."
An internet user questioned the English singer's move and wrote,
"Oh Adele I always knew you were not girls' girl..."
However, many of her fans defended Grammy-winning artist and said that the singer deserved all the accolades. A fan wrote that the 30 artists don't need to release albums regularly to remain "relevant."
"Look Swifters! Adele Doesn't have to put a album every year or 2 year and put out variations on vinyls or cd's. Adele can drop and Disappear and still be relevant for years like Sade. MWUAH"
Another fan commented on the number comparison between Taylor Swift and the Send My Love singer.
"Taylor thought she would have the most certified album in the usa, Adele went there and updated the 21. Adele the true owner of the album of the century!!!"
A fan commented that the 12-Brit awards winner achieved this feat without releasing multiple versions of her albums.
"Without defrauding, without releasing 7846 versions of the same old sh*t - just with pure talent and good music!"
21 was released in January 2011 via Columbia Records. The album came after she released her debut album, 19, in 2008. The album was titled after the age of the singer. The 11-track album debuted in the top spot on the Billboard 200 in its first week of release and remained in the top three positions for the first 24 weeks. The album was certified Diamond in 2012 after it sold 10 million copies. The album also bagged Grammy awards for the 'Album of the Year' and 'Best Pop Vocal Album' in 2012.
