Linsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are putting their disagreements aside and going back to the beginning. The iconic duo of Fleetwood Mac announced that they will reissue their only joint album, "Buckingham Nicks", which was first released in 1973. They announced it together on Instagram as a collaborative post, which featured a video of a billboard in Los Angeles announcing the reissue.

The reissue, which will be released by Rhino Records on September 19, will be the album's first release on vinyl, CD, and digital streaming platforms. Audio engineer Chris Bellman is in charge of the digital version, which has been remastered from the original analog tapes. The song, "Crying in the Night," is now available to stream. It was written by Stevie Nicks.

For weeks, there has been growing speculation about the reissue. The lyrics to "Frozen Love," a song from the album that helped them get spots in Fleetwood Mac, were used in the iconic couple's coordinated social media posts to tease fans. Nicks wrote:

“And if you go forward…”

And Buckingham finished the sentence by saying:

“I’ll meet you there."

Mick Fleetwood also chimed in, posting a video of himself listening to the song with the caption:

“Magic then, magic now.”

The billboard in Los Angeles was showcasing the cover art of a young Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, along with the re-release date of the album, Buckingham Nicks, on September 19 of this year.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's storied history

Stevie Nicks, now 77, and Lindsey Buckingham, now 75, recorded Buckingham Nicks in 1973 at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles. The album initially flopped, and they were dropped by Polydor.

It was only after producer Keith Olsen played the record for Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood that it changed everything for them, including Mick Fleetwood. Buckingham was recruited by Fleetwood, but he only joined them on one condition that Nicks would join as well.

They would soon go on to create history in rock and roll. They went on to record multi-platinum Rumours (1977) and Fleetwood Mac (1975), which were filled with emotional tension between the group members in songs like "Dreams", "Go Your Own Way", and "Silver Springs," which was added in the 2004 reissue.

Buckingham sued Fleetwood Mac after being fired in 2018 following decades of creative conflict. Tensions between him and Stevie Nicks persisted even after they came to an agreement. In a Rolling Stone interview from 2023, Nicks stated:

“I dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could. You could not say that I did not give him more than 300 million chances.”

Nicks and Buckingham's story is a famous one of how they were in a relationship, how they split up later, and how they wrote songs about each other.

One famous incident was Fleetwood Mac's live performance of "Silver Springs," a song that Nicks wrote when she broke up with Buckingham, at the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, CA, in May 1997, where Stevie Nicks stared at Buckingham while singing the lines:

"Time cast a spell on you/ But you won't forget me/ I know I could have loved you/ But you would not let me."

The staring intensified between the two when they reached the chorus, where both sang the lines:

"I'll follow you down/ 'Til the sound of my voice will haunt you/ Oh, give me just a chance/ You'll never get away from the sound/ Of the woman that loved you."

Despite these difficulties, Buckingham Nicks continued to be a vinyl rarity and cult favorite, featuring a unique limited-edition run of 5,000 vinyl copies and an extra 2,000 featuring replica 7-inch singles. The 2025 reissue seeks to finally make the album available to a larger audience.

Both Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham consider the early magic of their collaboration in recently released liner notes by veteran rock journalist David Fricke. Nicks reflects on their creative spark and remarks:

"It was a very natural thing, from the beginning.”

Buckingham said:

“It stands up in a way you would hope it would, by these two kids who were pretty young to be doing that work.”

Echoing the notion.

Nicks mentioned in an interview with Mojo that she was not comfortable with the album cover. She said that she “felt like a rat in a trap” during the photoshoot as the photographer had suggested taking a nude photo of the two to be used as the album cover, whereas Lindsey had no problems with it.

In a 2013 interview with Uncut, Buckingham revealed that he and Stevie have:

“Every intention of putting that album back out and possibly even doing something along with it, but I can’t put any specifics on that.”

An early version of "Crystal," which was subsequently rerecorded for Fleetwood Mac, is also included in the CD. The album includes:

  1. Crying in the Night (2025 Remaster)
  2. Stephanie (2025 Remaster)
  3. Without a Leg to Stand On (2025 Remaster)
  4. Crystal (2025 Remaster)
  5. Long Distance Winner (2025 Remaster)
  6. Don’t Let Me Down Again (2025 Remaster)
  7. Django
  8. Races Are Run (2025 Remaster)
  9. Lola (My Love) (2025 Remaster)
  10. Frozen Love (2025 Remaster)

A Fleetwood Mac reunion soon?

Though many have speculated on a return, it seems highly unlikely as Stevie Nicks has consistently ruled the reunion out multiple times after Christine McVie's death in 2022. Though Nicks was up for it back in 2012.

Nicks said:

“Without Christine, no can do. There is no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together in any way. Without her, it just couldn’t work.”

In a Rolling Stones interview in June 2024.

Even Mick Fleetwood has remained hopeful. In an interview with US magazine, he said:

“I always have a fantasy that [Stevie] and Lindsey would pal up a bit more and just say everything’s OK for them both. But we’ve had such an incredible career.”

It remains to be seen if the reunion ever happens.

Though Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham have a complicated relationship, they now complete a full circle in their music career as they return to the first album they made together before they became legends in rock and roll.
