Tate McRae made her MTV VMAs debut on September 7. The Greedy singer was spotted on the red carpet wearing a custom Ludovic de Saint Sernin gown, then took to the stage in an embellished white mini matching set.

McRae, 22, performed hit songs from her third studio album titled So Close to What, and began her performance with Revolving Door. She also performed Sports Car in a pit full of black sand as fire emerged in the background.

The Canadian singer-songwriter-dancer crushed the back-bend leg extension and was accompanied by backup dancers on the stage. The iconic move from the Sports Car music video inspired a viral TikTok trend among fans trying to replicate the move.

While speaking to MTV in an on-carpet interview, McRae opened up about the inspiration behind her VMA's outfit. McRae mentioned that the look was partly inspired by Medusa, who also inspired the storytelling for her onstage performance.

How many nominations did Tate McRae receive for the 2025 VMAs?

Tate McRae was nominated for six VMAs, including

  • Song of the Year for Sports Car.
  • Best Pop Artist, Best Editing, and Best Visual Effects for Just Keep Watching.
  • Song of the Summer for Just Keep Watching and for her feature on Morgan Wallen's What I Want.

McRae won a VMA for Song of the Summer for Just Keep Watching during the pre-show. McRae is currently on her Miss Possessive Tour to support her album So Close to What. In February, Tate McRae, while speaking to Elle about preparing for her tour, said:

"I don't really know what the switch is. Any time I'm in a studio, step on stage, or get onto a music video set, there's a five-second reset where I black out and turn into this confident fearless person."

Earlier this year, while speaking to Harper's Bazaar about her new album, Tate McRae opened up about the audience constantly comparing her with pop stars that have come before her.

"Comparisons are so funny. Because even if you're not intentionally doing something the comparisons just always come in. I remember this when I was 15 too. I got compared to so many artists. You can never come out and just be your own person...You're like, oh wow, that's such an honor. You even like (it), but then also you're trying to pave your own way as well."

MTV VMAs 2025 was held at the USB Arena in Elmont, New York, and was hosted by LL Cool J. Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, and Ariana Grande took home the most wins this year.
