Clipse and John Legend took to the stage at the Vatican for a performance, and the internet is divided.
As seen in videos going viral online, the duo joined forces with the singer for a performance of The Birds Don't Sing at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, where thousands gathered to witness it. The night also saw performances from Pharrell, Jennifer Hudson, Karol G, Teddy Swims, Jelly Roll, and Voices Of Fire, marking the first concert to ever be held in the Square.
However, fans are confused. Scores online are slamming the organizers for holding the performance on religious grounds, such as one user who penned:
"This is culturally inappropriate"
The comments didn't end there:
"They perform rap in religious places? Cringe," one user opined.
"Epic performance, they came a long way!" another cheered on.
"Absolutely love seeing hip hop at the global scale like this," someone else remarked.
"clipse and the vatican in the same sentence is crazy," yet another weighed in.
See how the rest of X is reacting:
"They trying to turn this into high art or something? Lol," someone quipped.
"Mind you this is the intro to their album. Just amazing man," another chimed in.
"They conjuring up something ill with this," yet another weighed in.
"For everyone hater this isn’t for you. This is a legendary moment for hip hop however you slice it. Some sh*t isn’t for everyone. There’s levels to this," one more penned on X.
Everything we know about Clipse and John Legend's recent performance:
Stereo Gum reported that Malice and Pusha T, the duo comprising Clipse, performed “The Birds Don’t Sing” off their newest reunion album Let God Sort Em Out, with John Legend and Voices of Fire harmonizing with them. The event was livestreamed on Disney channels like Disney+, Hulu, and ABC News Live.
Per the outlet, Pharrell acknowledged the success of the show, as he remarked:
“This is a rare cultural moment where the world stops and collectively tunes in. It is a message of unity and grace for all of humanity.”
The Happy singer debuted a new album with Voices of Fire just yesterday, titled, OPHANIM. As for the Clipse, they performed the same track just two months ago, during their appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. UPI has reported that the track was an ode to their parents, Mildred Thornton and Gene Elliott Thornton Sr., who died within months of each other in 2021.
