Ashlee Simpson is looking back on the scrutiny she was subjected to in the wake of her performance on Saturday Night Live in 2004.
Per People Magazine, the singer, now 40, sat down for a guest appearance on the August 21 episode of the Pod Meets World podcast. Speaking with hosts Rider Strong, Danielle Fishel, and Will Friedle, she was asked about her lip-syncing performance from when she was just 20 years old.
"I think it's a different era ... I think during that time, I mean, the bullying was insane," she remarked.
She was referring to her performance of her song Autobiography. At the time, she was seemingly confused on camera as she danced erratically and exited the stage while her band continued their set. She was later subjected to a wave of backlash for lip-syncing, though he has since explained that an acid reflux flare-up had taken its toll on her voice.

During Thursday's segment, Ashlee Simpson said that in the years since, she has always felt the need to explain herself to others:
“But then my whole life, I had to tell people, ‘Oh, but I perform every night.' My fans know. I had to know that in my heart." She continued, “Yes, I've had ups and downs just like every other human."
Now, the internet's reaction to when a celebrity makes a mistake is better, “but also it hasn't in some ways," she said.
“I think it's different now. For us, we had the magazines and this. Now everything's kinda more fleeting.” Noting that the whole debacle felt like it was going to be on her “shoulders forever," adding, “And I think now everything is, like, a little bit more fleeting and fast.”
Notably, Lorne Michaels has also given her two cents on the snafu. In September last year, she sat down for an appearance on CBS News’ podcast 60 Minutes: A Second Look, where she dished her take on what happened:
“I think accidents happen. I think that's the nature of live television,” she said.
Ashlee Simpson, the sister of fellow singer Jessica Simpson, also reflected on the drop of her debut album in 2004, referring to it as he "diary of my life." She said that it was a toxic relationship that contributed to some of the lyrics in Autobiography:
"I had a boyfriend that was like, 'You look fat, you need to get on the treadmill!'" Ashlee Simpson shared, adding that her first thought was, "Get ready for what I'm about to say."
