American singer, Darius Rucker had to cut his July 12 concert in Atlantic City short after just three songs, citing voice issues mid-performance.
The performance was one of the scheduled dates on the Darius Rucker Live tour. According to Penn Live, he shared a social media post the next day stating that he lost his voice mid-performance. Meanwhile, after stopping his set, he told the crowd:
“I can’t sing anymore. I will play on more song. I promise you we’re going to figure this out. You’re gonna get your money back. We’re gonna figure this out. I just can’t sing.”
He went on:
“I’ve never done this before. This is the first time this has happened in my 40-year career. This has never happened. I physically can’t sing, and I promise you on everything that I stand for, I will make this up to you.”
His final song for the night was Wagon Wheel, taken from his 2013 album True Believers. In his Instagram post, he wrote:
“Atlantic City … thank you so much for coming out Saturday night. I feel awful and I’m so sorry — I have never lost my voice in all my years of performing.”
Darius Rucker said they tried every way to reschedule the event, but it wasn’t possible in 2025. Hence, they decided to issue full refunds, and the venue would share the details. Rucker thanked fans for their kindness and shared that he looks forward to making it up to them.
Looking back on Darius Rucker’s upbringing and his mother’s influence
The singer was born in Charleston, South Carolina. In 2023, Darius Rucker released his eighth studio album, Carolyn’s Boy, which was a tribute to his mother. That same year, during an interview with Today, he explained why he chose to dedicate the album to her. The singer said:
“I just remember sitting there thinking at the end of the day, I am just my mom’s.”
His mother, Carolyn, was a single mother and worked double jobs to make ends meet. Rucker went on:
“She taught us to be nice. She taught us to be care. She taught us to give back. She taught us to always be the best person you can be.”
When asked about his childhood, Darius Rucker said he was lucky to have a close community, and his brothers and sisters shared a tight bond. He said his mother always taught them that family was the most important part of someone’s life.
When asked how his mother influenced his music, he said she was the biggest inspiration. He had a musical atmosphere in the house with the radio or records always playing.
Rucker described his mother as a talented vocalist whose voice filled their home. However, his decision to pursue music full-time came after his junior year in college. He said that the day he decided to tell his mother about the decision wasn’t easy for him.
Although Darius Rucker expected her to be upset, she supported him and told him to follow his dream. He said that moment has stayed close to him.
