Sacramentum was a Swedish extreme metal band that formed in 1990. The group was first known under the name Tumulus before changing it to Sacramentum. They gained notoriety in the underground metal scene for blending black and death metal styles. Their debut album was Far Away from the Sun, released on May 15, 1996.

The band was led by Nisse Karlén, who was the guitarist, vocalist, and co-founder. He passed away in 2025 at the age of 50 by suicide after dealing with mental health problems. After their debut, the band released two more full-length albums. The Coming of Chaos was released in 1997, and Thy Black Destiny followed in 1999. Both showed the band’s continuing growth but also marked the last years of their active period in the 1990s.

Discography and later years

The key discography of the band consists of three studio albums, one demo, and one EP, among several compilations. One of the releases of particular note is the Abyss of Time, a compilation released in 2008.

They also made tribute songs to bands such as Bathory, Sepultura, and Mercyful All the works of the band are reissued in 2022 as a boxed set entitled Complete Discography. This provided a second look at the music to new fans and newer collectors. The band has also been busy doing remixes and new product over the last several years.

The Coming of Chaos has since been remixed, and a new album named Shadow of Oblivion is in production. The influence of music could not be liquified, though there were long periods when the band was not active in it.

Far Away from the Sun is treated as one of the most powerful compositions of all time by many bands and admirers. Their resurgence in their sphere of influence has exposed their music to new generation followers.
