Mariah Carey has finally been honored with her first MTV Music Video Award!
The Grammy-winning artist took to the stage on Sunday night to accept her Video Vanguard Award, her first after eight VMA nominations. Following a performance of some of her hits, including “Honey,” “Heartbreaker,” “Obsessed,” “It’s Like That,” and “We Belong Together,” she jokingly said during her acceptance speech:
“What in the Sam Hill took you so long?!”
For the unversed, the phrase Sam Hill is a euphemism for hell, the Merriam-Webster dictionary states. According to It’s a Southern Thing, the phrase dates back to the early 19th century.
"The Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins says the exclamation 'was very popular with frontiersmen, especially when they needed to clean up their language in the presence of ladies,'" the website states.

Per ABC News, Mariah Carey had fans swooning when she sported a sparkling gold bodysuit on stage as she performed a medley of her biggest hits. It marked her first time performing at the ceremony in two decades. Ariana Grande introduced her on stage and later returned to present her with her first MTV VMA award.
According to the outlet, the award was all the more meaningful as it was Mariah Carey who presented the award to LL Cool J, who served as the host at this year’s ceremony, in 1997.
"Music videos are my way of life, of bringing music to my own life ... movies visualizing the sheer fantasy of it all. And let's be honest, sometimes there's just an excuse to put in the drama and do things I wouldn't do in real life, " she said in her speech. "After all this time, I've learned that music evolves, videos evolve -- but the fun, that is eternal," she continued. "Thank you, MTV, for playing my videos. And to our fans, the Lambily, I love you so much."
Page Six has reported that the songstress is now the 37th artist ever to receive the Vanguard Award since its inception in 1984. At the end of her speech, she also reminded her fans that her latest album, Here for It All, drops this September 26.
Earlier in the night, during the pre-show, Mariah Carey was also honored with the Moon Person trophy for Best R&B Video for “Type Dangerous.” She was up against Chris Brown, Leon Thomas and Freddie Gibbs, PartyNextDoor, Summer Walker, SZA, and The Weeknd and Playboi Carti.
