Metal guitarist Brent Hinds is ripping into his former Mastodon bandmates for being a "sh*t" group "with horrible humans."
The comments came on his Instagram post uploaded in honor of the 10th anniversary of their Once More ’Round the Sun album. Hinds announced his departure from the band early in March, shocking fans. At the time, a statement from the group celebrated their "25 monumental years together," adding:
"We're deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we've shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors. We are still very inspired and excited to show up for fans in this next chapter of MASTODON. As we move forward, all 2025 touring plans will remain intact. We look forward to seeing you on the road."
Now, months later, Brent Hinds is opening up about his old bandmates:
"I want [sic] miss being in a sh*t band with horrible humans," he commented on one post on Instagram, Metal Injection has reported.
Everything we know about Brent Hinds' departure from Mastodon as former bandmates open up about the split
In the months since his departure, Bill Kelliher, Brent Hinds' former bandmate, spoke to Guitar World about the split:
"What can you say about the legacy of Mastodon's first 25 years with Brent? It's been a fun, wild f**king ride, that's for sure. We achieved a lot of things that I never in a million years would have imagined. There's been Grammys, touring with our heroes, like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Motorhead, and Tool. I cherish all of that. Like a marriage, sometimes people grow apart, and they get interested in other things. We wish nothing but the best for Brent in chasing his dreams."
Kelliher continued:
"You know, it's amazing that we made it 25 years with the four of us. I mean, it's like being married to three other dudes, traveling the world, trying to stay the course, and having everybody agree. That we managed to do it this long, I feel like that's a feat in itself. You could never replace any of us because we [are the] the sum of four parts. That doesn't mean there's not someone else out there that has stuff to offer in a new direction," he concluded. "I think I'll just leave it there, you know? It was a hard decision we all had to make. It's just… it was just time."
Hinds joined Mastodon as a lead guitarist and vocalist back in 2000, alongside Troy Sanders, the bassist-cum-singer. Brann Dailor served as the drummer, and Bill Kelliher served as the guitarist. Their lineup was consistent for the last 25 years, across eight studio albums. Their debut album came in 2002, with Remission, and their latest LP with Brent came in 2021 with Hushed and Grim.
The band boasts nine albums that have charted on Billboard, and they have been nominated for over six Grammy Awards. Back in 2018, they came out on top for "Best Metal Performance" for Sultan’s Curse.
Following Brent Hinds' departure on March 5, the band played their first performance without him on March 9, according to Metal Injection, at Tool's Live in the Sand. Ben Eller stood in as a substitute, though the band has since welcomed Nick Johnston for their other live shows.
As for Brent Hinds, he has been active on social media to promote his other ventures. He has also performed for the band Fiend Without a Face, as well as others like West End Motel, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, and Legend of the Seagullmen, Loudwire has reported.
