Beloved R&B singer-songwriter Keri Hilson has returned with her third studio album, We Need to Talk: LOVE. The new release is the beginning of a trilogy. The album was dropped on Friday, April 18, 2025.

Some of Keri's late-2000s hits are Knock You Down and Pretty Girl Rock, among others. As revealed by AP, Keri Hilson's comeback comes after a 15-year absence that began after the release of her 2010 sophomore album, No Boys Allowed.

She was once considered one of the standout voices of her generation. Now, the 42-year-old artist has returned with a brand new album, and fans have been abuzz with it.

Associated Press reports that in a statement, the beloved singer shared:

"On some days, I'm like that was just a blink away. But for the most part, yeah, it feels like a long time because I’ve been waiting. I felt stagnant, I felt stuck for a while, and conflicted. I'm very much approaching this like I am starting over because that’s how it feels to me. I’ve lived nine lives since I last released … I'm a whole different person."

She continues:

"I feel resolved, both with the art and within about stepping back into the light. So, I think that resolve kind of had to be found before I felt confident enough to release the body of work and also unleash myself to the world again. There were songs in my past that I felt were political moves, songs I didn’t really love that I had to sing … I did not want to feel like that this time around"

Why did Keri Hilson take a 15-year career break?

Keri Hilson has worked with celebrities like Timbaland, Kanye West, and Ne-Yo. However, after the release of Pretty Girl Rock, the pressures of fame, industry conflicts, and personal struggles, among other issues, began to take their toll.

In an interview with People Magazine, Keri mentioned:

"It was already a decade of just pure dedication, and I needed a break. Fame was a beast for me, and I fell into a really dark place. I needed to step away for a moment. I thought it'd be just a one-year moment, not a 14-year moment, but it turns out it was necessary. I really can't regret it. I, as a human, needed that time."

According to reports, Hilson was battling depression. She described finding "new rock bottoms," and said she came close to leaving music. She had been working since the age of 14, from girl groups to writing songs for multiple pop icons such as Britney Spears and Usher.

Another significant reason was the release of a remix version of her song Turnin' Me On, where Keri Hilson appeared to take shots at Beyoncé. Though she claimed she did not write the lines, she said she was pressured to record them.
