Mariah Carey is trying to singlehandedly re-define what it means to age gracefully in modern times. In a recent interview on the U.K. radio station Capital FM, co-hosts Sian Welby, Jordan North and Chris Stark, each took turns asking the “Always Be My Baby” singer a series of rapid-fire questions about what she does or doesn’t support.
At one point, Jordan North asked the iconic singer:
“Is it true you don't acknowledge the passing of time?”
Carey was indiscriminately candid in her response.
“That is true. I just don't believe in it.”
When co-host Sian Welby then posited if Mariah celebrates her birthday, she responded with:
“I don't have a birthday, no. Anniversaries, yes.”
This is clearly an unconventional approach, but one that seems to be working for the R&B diva.
Mariah Carey against time
On the same topic, co-host Chris Stark also asked an astute question about how not ascribing to time could affect her day to day life.
“But if we were to meet up later, how would we know when?”
Mariah Carey’s answer was direct and to the point:
“Yeah, I would have someone call you and figure it out.”
For posterity's sake, this isn’t the first time Carey has shared her views on time and aging. A little over a decade ago, in a 2014 interview with Out Magazine she shared:
“I'm eternally 12 years old. I don't count years, but I definitely rebuke them--I have anniversaries, not birthdays, because I celebrate life, darling."
Two years later in 2016, when questioned along a similar line by Complex, Carey shared in jest:
“I don’t have a birthday. I was just dropped here. It was a fairyland experience.”
Later, in 2019, Carey also echoed the same frame of mind in an interview with Variety painting a clear and consistent line in her thinking on the subject for some time now.
“Yeah, I am like a petulant child. But my true fans know this. I’m eternally 12. But we’re artists.”
In other news, Mariah has teased an upcoming album drop as her fans continue to anticipate her sixteenth studio album slated to release later in the year. Last week, she released “Type Dangerous,” which is being touted as the album’s first single. A video for the song was also released and featured prominent social media personality Mr. Beast in a cameo appearance.
