Throughout his long professional life, Ralphs was a member of two legendary bands: Mott the Hoople and Bad Company. He wrote and recorded numerous hit singles that are still played today.

Ralphs started his music career in the 1960s. He first played with a band called the Buddies, then with the Doc Thomas Group. The group later changed its name to Silence.

In 1969, the band became known as Mott the Hoople. Ralphs was a key guitarist and songwriter in the group. They achieved major success with the 1972 album All the Young Dudes, produced by David Bowie. The title track became a big hit.

Ralphs played on several of the band’s albums, including Mott in 1973. After years with Mott the Hoople, Ralphs left the band to start a new project.

How did Mick Ralphs help form Bad Company?

After leaving Mott the Hoople, Ralphs collaborated with lead singer Paul Rodgers, drummer Simon Kirke, and bassist Boz Burrell to form Bad Company in 1973. Bad Company was the first band signed to Led Zeppelin's record label, Swan Song Records.

Ralphs wrote and performed on many of the band's biggest hits, including, "Can't Get Enough," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Ready for Love," and "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy.". Their debut album, Bad Company (1974), topped the US charts and went five-times platinum. The group became one of the all-time great rock bands of the 1970s. Ralphs' raw and powerful guitar tone characterized their sound.

What happened in Mick Ralphs’ later years?

Mick Ralphs continued to tour with Bad Company over the years. The band had several reunions and lineup changes. Ralphs was still involved in most of them. His final live performance in 2016 took place at the O2 Arena in London.

After the concert, he had a stroke. The stroke brought an end to his career as a touring artist. Ralphs passed away in June 2025 at the age of 81. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the same year as part of Bad Company. The induction ceremony has been planned for November 2025.
