Australian-born singer-songwriter Eddie Benjamin is again causing a stir in the global music business by contributing to Justin Bieber's surprise album SWAG. He co-wrote and contributed to 11 of the 21 tracks on Bieber's most recent album. The young Aussie has already established himself as a prolific producer and musician at the young age of 23.

Fans and streaming services were taken aback by the alum's unexpected release, which industry insiders called "late" and "chaotic." According to reports, major music services like Apple Music and Spotify were not given enough time to post the appropriate credits, which caused a brief misunderstanding over who had worked on the album.

An insider informed Daily Mail Australia,

"Justin delivered the audio for his new album really late, as in only a few hours before it came out. So far, no one knows who did what.”

Eddie Benjamin, however, ensured that his contribution was acknowledged. The Sydney native thanked him on Instagram.

In a post on Instagram, Eddie Benjamin thanked Justin Bieber in a touching post, which included behind-the-scenes moments while creating the album as well as some paparazzi pictures of the two. He wrote:

"Made a album with my bestie. My love for this being is so deep. So grateful to lean on you as a friend."

He continued:

"The fact we get to make music is a cherry on top. You teach me so much and are a true friend. This experience has been my favourite musical experience I've had making some soulmates along the way way. The swag is beyond real. Always has been Swag."

More about Eddie Benjamin, the musical prodigy from Sydney

Edward Benjamin was born in Bondi and raised in a very artistic family. His mother was a choreographer, while his father was a traveling drummer. In a previous interview with Flaunt, he stated:

"The household I grew up in was really creative. My dad was a touring drummer and my mom is a choreographer with dance. They were always working, there were always endless projects around my house. I lived on the beach as well, so lots of surfing."

Eddie Benjamin had already moved to Los Angeles before he was eighteen and worked with well-known musicians like Earth, Wind & Fire, Labrinth, and Meghan Trainor.

He immediately became well-known for his viral song covers and multi-instrumental skills, especially his passion for the bass. Benjamin's following base grew overnight when Bieber referred to him as "the next generation" during an Instagram Live jam session.

He went on to say that he never ever thought of music as a career:

"I never actually thought of it like that. It was never a question, I knew and needed to. I couldn’t not go and play, find out how to do shows, get a band together then post videos. I just always did it."

Several prominent figures in the business were drawn to Benjamin's skill, including musical sensation Sia, who has mentored him in Los Angeles. Eddie Benjamin developed a deep bond with the Ziegler family due to his previous relationship with Maddie Ziegler, Sia's goddaughter.

"SIA has definitely been like a mother to me out in LA. My girlfriend is Maddie Ziegler, that’s literally SIA’s godmom. That family has taken me in, we’ve become really good friends. It’s nice to have another Australian around. She has a lot of wisdom, it’s been beautiful. Couldn’t ask for a more supportive family."

In addition to his work with Ryan Tedder, Mike Sabath, and Labrinth, his career already has writing and production credits for Meghan Trainor and Shawn Mendes. When he was asked about his highlights during his Flaunt interview, Eddie Benjamin said:

"The highlights are countless. I was thrown into the deep end of the best writers in the world from quite a young age. Learning is incredible. I’m at Meghan’s studio all the time still, I’ve been working with Ryan and Labrinth a lot. I’m really blessed to work with them all. Ryan Tedder, Mike Sabath, all these incredible writers that write all your favorite songs.

Stepping into the spotlight

At 14, he began performing as a freelancer at local Sydney clubs. He is also a part of a band called Haze Trio, which he formed with his classmates during his teenage days.

Eddie Benjamin then went on to make his solo debut with songs like "F*ck My Friends," "Speechless," and "Running Away From Home," which he said were inspired by a friend's battle with addiction. His early work was primarily composed and produced. Speaking about his song, "Running Away From Home":

"This song means a lot to me, it’s about my friend who’s dealt with drug addiction problems for a long time. It’s about having to leave that and come to LA, leave someone you really care about and need to make sure they’re okay. The song can definitely come across lots of different ways however you want to take it."

Eddie Benjamin loves to maintain a close-knit inner network and uses music to stay grounded despite his growing celebrity. He stated, "You don’t really need anyone. We really don’t." Talking about his song, "F*ck My Friends,"

"If I love someone, it’s the real deal. That song could be for various situations. If people understand how much power they have in themselves and how much literally anybody can achieve, it's a really special thing."

SWAG is Justin Bieber's first full-length album since 2021's Justice. Benjamin's craft can be seen on the album's title track, "Swag," and is given credit on notable tracks like "Devotion," "Dadz Love," and "Therapy Session."
