George Veikoso, professionally known as Fiji, has passed away at 55. Multi-faceted Fijian musician, vocalist, songwriter, music producer, and occasional actor, singer gained popularity in the Polynesian reggae scene.

George was best known for acting in the 2002 surfer film, Blue Crush, and for co-writing and singing the theme song for Baywatch's season 11, "Let Me Be The One."

Polynesian Music first announced the news of George Veikoso's death on their social media page.

"A life so full, so meaningful. Fiji was more than an artist. He was a movement, a voice for the people, a light in the dark. There was, and always will be, only one Fiji. His music wasn't just something we listened to. It was something we lived through."

Sources close to the artist confirmed his passing on July 23, 2025. However, the cause of death and more details have not been released yet.


George Veikoso's personal life

George was born on May 10, 1970, and raised in Fiji, originally from the province of Tailevu. He began his career with his first professional singing appearance, which earned him $5 from the audience.

George Veikoso grew up singing in the church as a kid and credited members of his family for helping him reach his goal. Veikoso credited his uncle, Isireli Racule, who worked on Elvis Presley's "Drums of the Islands," his other uncle, Fijian jazz star Sakiusa Bulicokocoko, and Paul Stevans.

In 1987, he joined the Fijian band Roostrata but left it the same year to move to Hawaii due to the 1987 Fijian coups d'état.

In 1998, George Veikoso won the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Male Vocalist of the Year and Favorite Entertainer of the Year. He also won the People's Choice Award. His collaboration on the Island Warriors' compilation album earned him a Grammy-nomination for Best Raggae Album.

Veikoso co-wrote and sang Baywatch's season 11 theme song, Let Me Be The One, with Glenn Medeiros, and also appeared in the 2002 surfer film, Blue Crush.

Veikoso produced and released several albums during his career, including Evolution and Born and Raised, among others. In 2014, he won the Best Pacific International Artist Award at the Pacific Music Awards. In December 2021, he won the Pacific Music Awards and the Manukau Institute of Technology Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades-long contributions to the Polynesian reggae scene.

In September 2024, Veikoso hosted a 2-day concert, Homecoming Fiji, at King Charles Park in Nadi.
