Akon has reportedly been let go from custody after being detained for six hours in Georgia. The Grammy-nominated Locked Up singer, 52, was reportedly cuffed by Chamblee Police on the morning of November 7, based on a bench warrant issued in Roswell, New Mexico. TMZ has reported that the singer, born Aliaune Thiam, was arrested due to a missed court date linked to a September case involving his driver’s license. The Sun has reported that at the time, his Tesla broke down in the middle of the road in Georgia. Akon told cops his battery died, but when they ran his plates, they discovered that he was driving on a suspended license. He was let go at the time, though an officer noted that “an illegal vape in the center console was seized during the inventory and submitted for destruction.” Here's what Akon has been up to in recent years: His music and business ventures explored CBS News has reported that the Senegalese American was booked into the DeKalb County Jail shortly after 12:30 p.m. He was located by his 2024 Tesla Cybertruck parked at Tint World on Chamblee Dunwoody Road. Officers recognized him and later confirmed his identity before they informed him that there was an active warrant for his arrest. Per the outlet, cops noted that Akon was calm as they patted him down and informed the officers that he knew of the warrant. He was subsequently cuffed and detained before he was placed under arrest. Officers reported no findings of weapons or contraband. TMZ reported that he posed for a mug shot in a black hoodie, remaining mostly expressionless. As of this writing, his representatives have yet to comment on his arrest. The singer is most known for blending R&B with hip-hop and pop, and is regarded as one of the most iconic voices of the early 2000s. He has worked with several A-listers, including Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Lady Gaga. Some of his famed hits include "Smack That," "Soul Survivor," and "Lonely." In recent years, however, his career is marked by his philanthropic ventures in Africa. His “Akon Lighting Africa” initiative has reportedly equipped thousands of homes across the continent with solar power. He also announced a futuristic city called “Akon City" in Senegal in 2018, describing it as a “real-life Wakanda" at the time. He was referring to the fictitious high-tech African nation in the Marvel movie Black Panther. CBS News has reported that this isn't his first run-in with the law, however. Back in 1998, he was detained on charges relating to car theft for several months, though these were later dropped. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to second-degree harassment after he shoved a teenager off the stage during one of his concerts in New York. He was penalized with community service and a fine. The singer is currently on the road for a tour in India. He performed in the country's capital, Delhi, on November 9, and is expected to make an appearance in Bengaluru on November 14.
