Singer and a prominent member of the iconic 2010s boy band One Direction, Liam Payne, passed away in Argentina last year. His death was ruled a suicide back then. A full inquest into his death has been delayed till 2026 as "eyewitness reports" are being sought by a coroner.

Senior Coroner Crispin Butler, at Buckinghamshire Coroner's Court on Thursday, informed that "investigations in Argentina into the circumstances surrounding Liam's death" remain ongoing.

He said:

"We will continue to liaise with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to seek to procure full reports, eyewitness statements and other relevant evidence to assess in due course to address the statutory questions at a final inquest … namely who the deceased was, a final medical cause of death, when, where and how he came by his death."

Liam Payne's death

The For You singer was found dead on October 16, 2024 at the Casa Sur Palermo Hotel in the upscale Palermo neighborhood, in Argentina, after falling from the building and was pronounced dead by the emergency responders.

After the post-mortem analysis performed by the coroners in Argentina, it was determined that the cause of death was "polytrauma", which refers to severe injuries caused by multiple traumas. The injuries were consistent with falling from an elevated height. It was also established that there was no indication of third-party involvement or deliberate self-harm, while his toxicology reports showed that alcohol, cocaine, and prescription medications such as antidepressants were in his system.

The one-year anniversary of the passing of Liam Payne came this past month, where fans from all over the world were mourning the loss, including the singer's girlfriend at the time of his death, Kate Cassidy.
