Oasis and Liam Gallagher's return to Manchester’s Heaton Park reportedly did not go as smoothly as they had expected, with the band facing some stiff opposition from the crowd in attendance. This was Oasis' first appearance in their hometown in more than 16 years, and the crowd kept the banter going when it erupted into boos at the slight mention of Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager.
For the uninitiated, the Gallagher brothers are Manchester City fans, and they let their allegiance to the blue side of Manchester be known to those in attendance. Guardiola was also present in the crowd and reveled in the chaos from the sidelines.
What caused the crowd to boo Liam Gallagher?
Liam Gallagher teased the Manchester United fans by introducing Guardiola as the "greatest manager of all time", even as he dedicated a song to him. This was a subtle dig at Sir Alex Ferguson, who managed Manchester United for 27 years and is widely considered to be one of the greatest managers of all time. While dedicating the song D’You Know What I Mean? to Guardiola, Liam yelled from the stage:
"I’d like to dedicate this next tune to the greatest manager of all time, the one and only Pep Guardiola."
Even after watching the Manchester United-leaning crowd erupt into boos, Liam Gallagher decided to keep the roast going and unveiled a cutout of Pep Guardiola on stage, much to the dismay of United fans in attendance. After taking shots at United fans, he launched a not-so-subtle dig at the team's last season's performance as well, where they finished 15th.
"Who the f**k are you booing, who you f**king booing. I don't ask for much. Stop sulking. You haven't had a lot to jump around about lately. It's f**king easy, man."
Moreover, Noel and Liam Gallagher faced booing at the event due to their being loyal to Pep Guardiola, a figure who is controversial within the soccer culture of Manchester. The incident did not affect the brothers, and they put up a performance to behold, performing several hit tracks like Hello, Acquiesce, Morning Glory, Some Might Say, Bring it On Down, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Fade Away, among others.
Clips from the event have gone viral on social media, and factions have had their say on the event as well. United supporters have been trolling Liam Gallagher on social media, whereas the City fans have been complimentary of Oasis on social media for keeping the banter going amid a period of lull. The new Premier League Season is set to begin on 15 August 2025.
Manchester United finished the last season in 15th position, and Manchester City finished 3rd. United have had a bad start to the transfer window as well, with only one incoming (Matheus Cunha) being pushed through the door till now. It remains to be seen how the new season pans out for the two Manchester clubs.
