The Internet band member Syd announces a new album in the making.
The LA-based R&B collective, The Internet, went on hiatus in 2022 to allow its members to explore solo projects. The five-piece band was formed in 2011, with former Odd Future members Syd, Matt Martians, Steve Lacy, Patrick Paige II, and Christopher Smith.
The band debuted with their first album, Purple Naked Ladies, in 2011 on Odd Future Records through Sony, and rose to wider recognition with the release of Feel Good in 2013. The band also won a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album in 2015 for their album Ego Death.
Syd or Sydney Loren Bennett, while speaking to TMZ in an article published on September 26, revealed that the band has reunited and is back. TMZ caught the artist at LAX on Friday when she was en route to joining Renee Rapp on her 27-city Bite Me tour.
This comes after the artist dropped her new record, GMFY (For Me F***ed Up), from her upcoming album on September 25, and mentioned that band member Steve Lacy is also working on a new solo album while simultaneously working on a new The Internet album. Benett also mentioned that the band has been meeting up in Los Angeles throughout the year, weekly, to work on the album.
"I have no idea what's next," says Syd
Earlier in an interview with NME in April 2022, Syd had mentioned that the next Internet album would be the band's last album, and the band members would be going their separate ways.
“The next Internet album will also be our last. I have no idea what’s next. I don’t know. Maybe we’ll create an Internet label. We talked about that just signing ourselves.”
The singer also mentioned that the reason behind the hiatus was not personal and did not reflect the band members' relationship with each other.
"The Internet is exactly what we want it to be. It's snapshot of where we are at the time - individually and together. We di Sunday night wine night, but this is the first time that Matt's been able to participate because he lives in Georgia."
The band's most recent album, Hive Mind, was released in 2018, a year after Benett released her debut solo album, Fin, and three-track EP Always Never Home.
Before Hive Mind's release, other members had also released their own independent projects. Matt Martians released The Drum Chord Theory, Steve Lacy released Steve Lacy's Demo, Patrick Paige II released Letters of Irrelevance, and Christopher Smith, as part of C&T, released Loud.
