Musician and the Libertines frontman Pete Doherty has opened up about his health. In his recent appearance on the Radio's X The Chris Moyles Show, Doherty revealed his diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes on March 7, 2025. The singer sat for a candid conversation with host Toby Tarrant about his health and the worst-case scenario.

When asked about his health, Pete Doherty replied that he was "alright" and pointed towards his feet. He stated,

"I’ve got the old orthopaedic shoes on. It’s a diabetes thing, actually. The toes, you see. They went a bit…They're still there, and they're on the mend. But I’ve just got to wear these."

The singer elaborated on the effects of the diagnosis and noted people's perceptions and comments on his shoes. Pete Doherty is performing around the UK in support of his newest solo album, Felt Better Alive, set to release on May 16, 2025.

Pete Doherty gives health updates and talks about how people have responded to his orthopaedic shoes

Pete Doherty elaborated on his health condition and told Tarrant that he "has got to" wear the orthopedic shoes. In his February concert in Berlin, Tarrant revealed his doctor advised him "to stay off his feet." He revealed that unmanaged diabetes and health issues can lead to severe consequences, including a potential amputation of his feet.

Per Diabetes UK, there is a link between diabetes and amputations. They noted that "raised blood sugar levels" can reduce the overall blood flow to the feet and other parts of the body. They added,

"Cuts and sores may struggle to heal. You may get cramps and pain. Left untreated, these problems can lead to foot ulcers, infections and, at worst, amputations.”

While elaborating on his health, Pete Doherty was quick to tell Tarrant that he wanted to clarify something "before he gets any jokes in" about his shoes. He explained,

"It’s been hard, it’s been hurtful, walking around the streets of London in these, do you know what I mean? People can be so cruel.”

The singer has previously shared his battles with substance use and how he felt driven to use it again. In an exclusive interview with Big Issue in January 2025, he revealed he is not dependent on substances anymore, but,

"For a long time, it was very hard to imagine – heroin was always there for so long. And even when I gave it up, in the back of my head, there was a sense that eventually: ‘I will find my way back to you.’

Pete Doherty appears to be juggling the release of his new album, live performances, and physical health concerns.

Pete Doherty revealed he has to wear orthopedic shoes due to his diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes. He noted his disappointment at people's reaction to his shoes in public and the discomfort he has experienced ever since. However, he added that his doctor advised him that it would reduce the risk of severe consequences. The singer is not letting his health stop his shows and is next scheduled to perform at Wimborne The Tivoli Theatre on March 12.
