Sia and her estranged husband, Dan Bernad, were embroiled in a custody battle for their son just months after the Chandelier hitmaker filed for a divorce in March. On Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Bernad was denied sole custody of their son. While this is a victory for the singer, an inside source reveals that the singer isn't happy with how the situation played out.

According to People magazine, Sia was ‘devastated’ when the custody battle became public knowledge. As someone who values her privacy, Sia found the situation very painful.

The source said:

“She's always been guarded her personal life. She's heartbroken that her ongoing divorce and custody battle has become public. She's devastated that something so private has turned into a headline."

They added:

“She's incredibly protective of her family, and this attention has been very painful for her.”

The insider also said that the Elastic Heart hitmaker was mainly focused on her son and that the singer has been sober for a while.

“Her focus is completely on her child right now. She's proud of her sobriety and the stability she's created, and she wants to shield her child. She doesn't want it overshadowed by court filings.”

The source added:

“She's had a very public career, but she's managed to stay private in a way few artists can. This has been very difficult, but she's staying focused on her child and her recovery.”

More details on Sia’s custody battle

On October 27, Daniel Bernad filed for the sole legal and physical custody of their child, claiming he was the only parent fit to care for their son. He accused Sia of drug abuse and alleged that she was unstable and unfit to care for their child.

He reportedly wrote in the court filings:

“Sia is an unfit and unreliable parent struggling with substance abuse and addiction, rendering her incapable of providing safe or stable care for Summi. I am the only safe and reliable parent for our son. I am a doctor, young, healthy, and have no criminal history or drug or alcohol addiction issues.”

The singer responded to Daniel’s allegation on October 28, claiming that her husband’s allegation was false and that she has been sober for six months.

She reportedly wrote in her filing:

“To date, every request by Dan for additional custodial time has been directly tied to financial gain rather than a genuine effort to foster a meaningful parental relationship with Summi.”
