Singer and songwriter Rick Davies, famous for co-founding the British band Supertramp, died at the age of 81. The news was confirmed by the band's statement, which read:
"The Supertramp Partnership is very sad to announce the death of the Supertramp founder, Rick Davies after a long illness."
It continued:
"Rick passed away at his home on Long Island on September 5th. We had the privilege of knowing him, and playing with him for over fifty years. We offer our sincere condolences to Sue Davies."
According to a statement from the band, he died of cancer. Born in Wiltshire, Rick was the son of a merchant navy officer. He first discovered his interest in music at the age of eight and has been active in the industry since 1956.
When did Rick Davies form Supertramp?
Rick formed Supertramp with Roger Hodgson in 1969. The brand was initially named Daddy and was changed to Supertramp a year later. The same year, the band signed with A&M Records in 1970. Later, the group was joined by Bob Siebenberg, Dougie Thomson, and John Helliwell. However, Roger Hodgson parted ways with the band in 1983.
Davies gave Supertramp many hit songs like "Goodbye Stranger" and "Bloody Well Right" that added to the band's recognition. Because of their fame and songs, the band also became a four-time nominee in the Grammy Awards.
The news has come as a shock to the fans who are paying their respects to the late singer.

"Rick Davies, founder of Supertramp, has passed away at 81 after a decade-long battle with multiple myeloma. His soulful voice and touch on the Wurlitzer shaped timeless songs like “Bloody Well Right” and “Goodbye Stranger.” A true legend."
A fan, @garcogait, wrote on X:
"it's rly hard to find a picture of him where he's not being goofy😭 rick davies died earlier today, I just want to thank him and supertramp for introducing me to prog and just making the best music that's basically been a constant for me throughout my entire musical journey :)"
