The Grammy-winning artist SZA recently stepped into a serious conversation not about music, but about public accountability.
In a now-viral comment, SZA openly criticized the continued harassment Megan Thee Stallion faces online, despite the legal outcome of her 2020 shooting case.
The post, shared under a video related to the incident, reads:
“The density !!!!! I'm actually SO shocked at the amount of ppl fully comfortable bullying a woman that's proven to be a victim of assault ??! Like out loud where other ppl can see you ?? Lmao u finna be stupid OUTLOUD?”
Why SZA spoke up after the Tory Lanez verdict
SZA’s statement didn’t come out of nowhere. It’s rooted in a highly publicized case that has continued to stir controversy long after the legal process ended.
In December 2022, rapper Tory Lanez real name Daystar Peterson was convicted on three felony counts by a Los Angeles jury in connection with the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. The charges included assault with a semiautomatic firearm, discharging a firearm with gross negligence, and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle.
According to Megan’s testimony, Lanez shot her in the feet after an argument that escalated while they were leaving a party in the Hollywood Hills. The jury found Lanez guilty, and in August 2023, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Despite this outcome, Megan has reportedly remained the subject of relentless skepticism, online ridicule, and misinformation often from social media users questioning the legitimacy of her claims. This ongoing backlash is what SZA was addressing.
SZA’s words were brief, but they carried weight. Her defense of Megan Thee Stallion wasn’t about taking sides in a he-said-she-said story it was a reminder that a guilty verdict was delivered, and yet public skepticism continues.
