The new single is coming months after the artist released her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, on May 30. The Wrecking Ball singer first teased the new track in June when she appeared on Monica Lewinsky's podcast. During the interview, Cyrus revealed that she wrote Secrets after the tension between her and her father had resolved.

“I wrote this song about my dad because I wanted him to tell me even though there were secrets, even though I didn't really want to know. I wanted to be the one he felt safe enough to tell me the things that were damning and damaging to the family. I wanted him to think that as a middle child, I'm old enough that I could take some of that," the singer said.

Miley Cyrus' father, Billy Ray Cyrus, shared a post on August 25 on his birthday in which he wrote that his daughter gave him the "gift of music" and wrote "a song called Secrets." He also added that Miley collaborated with Fleetwood Mac to play in this song.
