The song's lyrics talk about the struggles of exclusion and the pressure to fit into society. The first verse and prechorus encapsulate this.

First verse:

“Goin' out after midnight/ Two vampires on the street/People stare when we walk by, 'Cause they're scared of you and me.”

The prechorus reads:

“I'm not the same as them, I never was, Never gonna let us into their club/ Know you gotta give it back as good as you got/ 'Cause this is our time, and this is our shot.”

The chorus and post-chorus of 77 express a struggle against conformity and authority.

Chorus:

“She said she don't wanna run anymore/ I don't care about goin' to Heaven/ She said, 'Do it like we did it before'/ Fight back like '77.”

Post chorus:

“Hey, hey, hey-ayy/ Fight back like 77/ Hey, hеy, hey-ayy/ Fight back like '77.”

Immediately after releasing 77, Avril Lavigne and Billy Idol performed it at the April 28, 2025, episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
