The former lead singer of Linkin Park, Chester Bennington, died on July 20, 2017, by suicide. The news came as a shock for the fans at that time, as Linkin Park released their last album, One More Light, with Chester Bennington months before his death in May. Additionally, the band released the music video for "Talking to Myself" on July 20, 2017, the same day Chester died, which made headlines.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Bennington had a net worth of $30 million at the time of his death. After a long break, Linkin Park returned in 2024 with their new album titled From Zero. The band also introduced a new lead singer, Emily Armstrong, for the vocals.

The news got mixed reactions from the fans. While some admired her for her strong vocals, others criticized the band and Emily for taking Chester's place. The band also got criticized by Jaime Bennington, son of Chester Bennington, on Instagram, where he said Mike Shinoda, the co-founder of the band, is:

"quietly (erasing) my father’s life and legacy in real time… during international suicide prevention month"

However, Linkin Park never responded directly to his statement.

Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda defends Emily Armstrong amid the lineup controversy

While Mike Shinoda is often seen supporting the new lead singer, Emily Armstrong, in their videos, he has never publicly defended her. However, the rapper recently spoke about Emily to The Guardian while referring to the lineup change, saying:

"There were people who lashed out at Emily, and it was really because she wasn’t a guy"

He went on to explain that fans were:

"used to Linkin Park being six guys and the voice of a guy leading this song. They were just so uncomfortable with what it was that they chose a ton of things to complain about. They’re pointing in 10 different directions saying: ‘This is why I’m mad, this is why the band sucks.’"

Emily Armstrong also admitted she wasn’t prepared for the reaction that followed after the internet found out she was the new lead singer. Speaking about it, she added:

"If there was something really, really pressing, I think our PR would talk to us about it. But I’m old enough to know the difference between real life and the internet."

Along with Emily, the band also brought in Colin Brittain as their new drummer.

Mike Shinoda reveals the reason behind not performing One More Light

Along with their new songs from the album From Zero, the band has also performed many hit tracks from their earlier albums. However, fans have noticed that they haven’t performed One More Light, which Chester originally sang. Remembering Chester Bennington, Shinoda also revealed that their song One More Light was written:

"For a woman at the label that we worked with who passed away. Then after Chester passed, the world decided that it was about him. And so that’s just too sad to play."

Although Chester Bennington is no longer alive, Mike Shinoda has continued to speak openly about his impact on the band in many interviews. The band also remembered him on his birthday through a post on social media.
