What happened to Daniel Williams? All we know as The Devil Wears Prada founding drummer dies In San Diego Plane Crash

Daniel Williams, the founding member and former drummer of the band The Devil Wears Prada, died in a plane crash in San Diego, alongside his co-passenger Dave Shapiro, who was a music agent. The 39 year old drummer was working as a software engineer at the Go Pro company.

The drummer's death was confirmed late in the day on May 22, 2025 by his father Larry to TMZ. The crash's reason is still under investigation at the time of writing.

As per a report by the Seattle Police Department, the crash happened in the Murphy Canyon residential area, with the plane crashing into the residential area of Tierrasanta near Sculpin St & Santo Rd in the pre dawn hours of May 22, 2025 and engulfing several houses in process:

"UPDATE: Approx. 100 residents evacuated after aircraft crash near Sculpin St & Santo Rd. At least 2 confirmed dead, 8 injured, ~10 buildings damaged. Evacs & road closures remain. NTSB en route. Call 619-531-2000 if you find debris or jet fuel."

The identity of the other passengers besides Williams and Shapiro are not known at the time of writing. The Devil Wears Prada responded to the news of their former drummer's death with a remembrance post on their official Facebook page, stating:

"no words. We owe you everything. Love you forever."

The US band The Word Alive also posted their condolences to the victims of the crash in a post on their X page on May 23, 2025:

"RIP to our friends Dave Shapiro, Daniel Williams and the others involved in the plane crash this morning. Dave was was of the most influential and positive forces in the our music scene and beyond, and Dan was one of the most influential and positive forces behind the kit RIP."

There were also condolences and tributes on the deaths by drummer Luke Holland, the band Drug Church, Slipnot's brand KnotFest and more. While Williams was a drummer, Shapiro as a music agent represented the likes of Sum 41 and I Prevail, among other bands.


Daniel Williams's career with The Devil Wears Prada: A Brief Overview

Daniel Williams alongside Mike Hranica, Chris Rubey, Jeremy DePoyster, James Baney and Andy Trick founded The Devil Wears Prada back in 2005 in Dayton, Ohio. Jeremy DePoyster and Andy Trick joined the band after their first few shows.

The band released their debut studio album, Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord, on August 22, 2006. The album was quickly followed by their second studio album, Plagues, the following year on August 21, 2007. The second album brought Daniel Williams and the rest of the band chart success, with the album going on to chart within the top 100 positions on the Billboard 200 album chart.

The Devil Wears Prada changed labels after this second album, singing on to Ferret Music after leaving Rise Records. The band released their third album, With Roots Above and Branches Below, through their new label on May 5, 2009. With Roots Above and Branches Below was a major success, charting at the top spot on the Independent Albums chart in the US.

The next two albums by The Devil Wears Prada before Daniel Williams's departure from the band were equally successful, with Dead Throne being the band's most successful album till date. The late drummer's last work with The Devil Wears Prada was on their fifth studio album, 8:18.
