Taylor Swift released “Vigilante Sh*t” in 2022 as part of her album Midnights. The song sparked a lot of speculation, as fans believed it could be about the singer's dispute with record executive, Scooter Braun, over her masters. Recently, Scooter spoke up about it and denied the rumours.
For those unversed, “Vigilante Sh*t” lyrics read, in part:
"I don't start it but I can tell you how it ends, Don't get sad, get even. So on the weekends I don't dress for friends. Lately I've been dressing for revenge."
"She needed cold hard proof so I gave her some. She had the envelope, where you think she got it from? Now she gets the house, gets the kids, gets the pride. Picture me thick as thieves with your ex-wife. And she looks so pretty. Driving in your Benz. Lately she's been dressing for revenge”
These lyrics, particularly the one about the ex-wife, led many fans to guess the song was about Scooter Braun. This is because of Swift and Braun's past feud regarding her masters. The timing of the song, which came after Scooter’s divorce from Yael Cohen in 2022, added more fuel to the rumors.

Scooter Braun speaks out
On July 17, 2025, Scooter spoke on the Question Everything podcast. During the conversation, he claimed that the song is not about him. He also shared that he and his ex-wife, Yael, talk every day and are very close. Moreover, he said that he even has a tattoo that says “same team,” depicting their bond.
Scooter said that he did not think Taylor Swift's song was directed at them. He also said the divorce was more painful for him than any public drama, emphasizing that his marriage ending changed him more than conflicts in his career.
Addressing the speculations, he said:
“My ex-wife is one of my best friends. So, me and my ex-wife laugh at that stuff.”
Swift reclaimed her masters in May 2025
On May 30, Taylor Swift announced on her website that she has bought her masters back. While fans continue to speculate and discuss the lyrics' deeper meaning, Braun's recent comments indicate that the song is not about him.
Taylor Swift’s Midnights album marked a shift as it leaned into raw feelings like guilt, shame, and revenge. “Vigilante Sh*t” was its darkest, most direct song. Fans saw it as a return to the bold edge she portrayed in her Reputation era.
Taylor Swift has not commented on the speculations around the song.
