MGK has released his new album Lost Americana, which offers an insight into his family life with Megan Fox and his children through the scope of music. The rapper's relationship with Fox came to an end last year, and her presence is evident both directly and indirectly in the album.
Throughout the 13-track album, the rapper highlights themes of personal transformation and fame's limitations within the context of the American cultural identity. The album also features cameos from artists such as SlimXX, BazeXX, Nick Long, No Love To The Middle Child, and Travis Barker, among others.
Key themes explored in MGK's Lost Americana
Megan Fox's presence weighs heavily on Lost Americana, perhaps none more so than in Orpheus, which is a song that she helped co-write. The album is filled with innuendos that seemingly refer to MGK's time together with Fox, and demonstrates the rapper's ability to channel his personal experiences into art.
In interviews surrounding Lost Americana's release, the Till I Die-famed star gave fans some hints about the expectations regarding the album. In the sit-down with PEOPLE, he was quoted as saying:
"Vulnerability is how I was able to hold on to the fan base I’ve had for so many years. The human behind the music has to show them the human side… Maybe this time, [my haters] will get to know the man-slash-broken-boy behind the moniker MGK."
The album has certainly delivered on that front, as Lost Americana chronicles the rapper's own journey through rehabilitation and relationship struggles. In the song Treading Water, MGK explores feelings of being overwhelmed by fame and relationship expectations. The rapper also expressed his wishes to improve himself for Fox (seemingly) and his daughter (Saga) in the song by saying.
"The beast killed the beauty/The last petal fell from the rose/And I loved you truly/That’s why it’s hard to let it go/I broke this home, but I’ll change for our daughter/So she’s not alone."
The rapper also sings about spending Christmas at a rehabilitation center, and also urges the media to keep his baby daughter out of the situation.
In the song Can't Stay Here, he addresses the pain of separation and sings about the long nights he spent drinking in bars to overcome his pain.
Strikingly, the album is topped with the song Orpheus, which narrates Greek myths of a musician who traverses the underworld to save his wife. Further on in the song, MGK laments over the lost loved one, and the similarities between his struggles through rehabilitation and relationships are brought to the center of the song.
Orpheus ends on a tragic note, with the following lyrics being played out in the background:
"Do you remember when you mistakenly/Thought that I could make you happy?/I wish that we could still dream and dream/I won’t let you love me, but I can’t let you leave me/It’s a tragedy and we’ve all seen that scene."
Lost Americana shows the longing that MGK seemingly shares for his relationship with Megan Fox, and his love for his daughters is also displayed throughout the album. The album also mentions instances of the rapper's efforts to save their relationship during difficult times, which ultimately proved to be futile.
MGK and Megan Fox are still on good terms, and he even hailed her efforts in the album recently. The two have a positive degree of respect and are focused on co-parenting their daughter.
