Child star and pop icon Miley Cyrus started her acting and singing career when she was just 14 years old. Her role as Hannah Montana on the eponymous Disney show shot Cyrus to fame. Hannah Montana became a commercially successful franchise and continued from 2006 to 2011. After the show ended, Miley Cyrus started her journey as a singer, exploring different genres and styles till she perfected her art.
Over the years, Miley Cyrus has released eight studio albums in total, with her ninth album scheduled for release on May 30, 2025. She has worked with big names in the music industry, including her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, her godmother, Dolly Parton, and other artists such as Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey, Dua Lipa, Kid Laroi, and more.
During an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show in 2020, she shared that before releasing Midnight Sky, she received the "coolest letter" from Fleetwood Mac's lead singer, Stevie Nicks. She told Fallon during the interview:
"I have the coolest letter ever from Stevie too... I sent her the song, and I said, 'You know, I have an alternate melody if you don’t want me to kind of pay tribute to you and your greatness and how much you’ve inspired me.' And she said, 'You can borrow from me anytime,'" Cyrus recalled the conversation with Stevie Nicks.
More details about how Miley Cyrus used Stevie Nicks as an inspiration for Midnight Sky
Before releasing Midnight Sky in 2020, Cyrus got in contact with Stevie Nicks, who was Fleetwood Mac's frontwoman. Prior to this conversation, the two women were not well acquainted with each other.
Miley Cyrus used a small sample of Nicks's song, "Edge of Seventeen," in her "Midnight Sky" track. Before releasing it to the public, Miley reached out to the frontwoman for permission to use the sample in her song. Stevie Nicks was flattered and even told her she's welcome to "borrow" from her work anytime.
Miley Cyrus also adds that she looked up to many women in the music industry for inspiration, and the fact that she has this "direct relationship" with Stevie Nicks is "life-changing" for her. In her own words:
"Now, you ask me about new artists and what my advice would be for them, and one thing I’ve just learned from her, from Dolly, from Joan [Jett], all in the same, is that they’re so open and welcoming to the newer members, the younger artists coming up, and they offer their mentorship... It’s just been really, incredibly rewarding in my career having someone like her to look up to. Everyone looks up to Stevie Nicks, but having that direct relationship has been kind of life-changing," Cyrus ends.
After this conversation with Stevie Nicks, Miley and the Landslide singer collaborated on "Edge of Midnight (Midnight Sky Remix)." Nicks added a few new vocals, as well as a guitar riff from the original "Edge of Seventeen" song. Coming back to 2025, Miley is set to release her latest studio album, Something Beautiful, on May 30, 2025.
