Junkyard lead singer David Roach is undergoing one of the most challenging phases of his life, and he recently gave fans an update about his health condition in a statement released on social media. The rockstar has been with a form of cancer known as squamous cell carcinoma, which has had adverse effects on his head, neck, and throat.
According to Medline Plus, squamous cell carcinoma can be described as:
"Squamous cell carcinoma is a cancer that arises from particular cells called squamous cells. Squamous cells are found in the outer layer of skin and in the mucous membranes, which are the moist tissues that line body cavities such as the airways and intestines. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) develops in the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, and throat."
Its impact on the body includes:
"Depending on the location, the cancer can cause abnormal patches or open sores (ulcers) in the mouth and throat, unusual bleeding or pain in the mouth, sinus congestion that does not clear, sore throat, earache, pain when swallowing or difficulty swallowing, a hoarse voice, difficulty breathing, or enlarged lymph nodes."
David Roach's statement on his condition
The news about David Roach's health issues first emerged earlier this year, when Junkyard released a statement in his stead on social media. The situation has escalated recently after Roach started experiencing persistent fever and cough symptoms, as a result of which he was admitted to the emergency room.
The serious nature of the cancer has necessitated a serious medical treatment, and his fiancée, Jennifer, who has been forced to sacrifice her career in order to provide him with full-time care, has given an update to the well-wishers on social media. The two issued a common release with a picture of David Roach on his hospital bed. The statement posted on Instagram read as follows:
"First off, we want to thank you all for the overwhelming support and love you’ve shown us during this incredibly challenging time. We wish we could respond to each of you, but honestly, there are no words right now. We’re still struggling to process the news we received on Tuesday. It’s devastating and life-altering, and we’re trying to navigate through the emotions and uncertainty that come with it."
The statement then went on to add:
"David is showing such incredible strength and resilience, and even in the midst of this darkness, he’s still managing to keep his sense of humor. It’s a reminder of how amazing he is. But we know this journey ahead will be extremely tough, David made it clear he is not giving up hope and we’re going to need all of your love and prayers."
Fans and fellow musicians have rallied around David Roach, and several initiatives have been undertaken to help cover his medical expenses. These are concerts to raise funds (benefit concerts), the sale of special merchandise, and the setting up of GoFundMe pages to assist the artist in his recovery.
