One Direction was one of the greatest boy bands during the 2010s. The boys decided to take a hiatus in 2016, after Zayn Malik left the band to focus on his career as a solo artist. The last time they were seen performing a televised show was on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve broadcast on December 31, 2015. Only four of the remaining members were a part of this show.
The British-Irish boy band consisted of Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan. The group was created on the British reality television series, The X Factor, in 2010. Their music and the fan girls did all the work of boosting the five boys into stardom.
Despite 1D's short-lived fame, all of the boys have moved on to forge successful solo careers for themselves over the years. Keep reading to learn some of the biggest career highlights of the teen pop boy band over a span of six years.
One Direction's career highlights explored
One Direction began when the five boys, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Niall Horan, were only teenagers. All of them auditioned for The X Factor in 2010 and failed to move forward in the "Boys" category. However, they were paired together as a boy band by Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger, and qualified for the "Groups" category.
While the British boy band did not win during their season of The X Factor, they came in third place. However, this did not stop the five boys from driving their fan girls crazy, and in turn, inspired a huge following on social media.
