Ian Watkins, a member of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets, was killed in a prison attack on Saturday, October 11, 2025. Ian and guitarist Lee Gaze formed Lostprophets in 1997. Mike Lewis, Stuart Richardson and Mike Chiplin were later recruited to join the band.
The band released a total of five studio albums: The Fake Sound of Progress, Start Something, Liberation Transmission, The Betrayed, and Weapons. The group disbanded in 2013.
Ian Watkins was arrested numerous times in 2012 on various drug charges, but was granted bail several times. He was ultimately arrested in December and charged with multiple counts of s*xual assault. He was convicted of his crimes and sentenced to 29 years in prison.

Ian Watkins died on Saturday, October 11, 2025, after an attack at HM Prison Wakefield. He was 47 years old.
According to a statement by the police, his death was discovered after their attention was drawn to a serious assault on a prison around 9:30 am.
“Officers were called by staff at the prison at 9.39 am this morning (Saturday 11 October) to reports of a serious assault on a prisoner. A man aged 48 was found with serious injuries. Despite medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene,” the statement read.
The West Yorkshire Police departments revealed that they have two suspects in custody already. While they didn't name them, they revealed they were aged 25 and 43, respectively.
The department also shared that the suspects are currently in police custody and the case is being treated as a homicide.
“Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are investigating, and enquiries remain ongoing.”
This would be the second recorded attack against Ian in prison. In August 2014, he was taken hostage and was stabbed before he was rescued by prison officers six hours later.
In December 2013, Watkins was convicted of:
1) attempted rape and s*xual assault of a child under 13
2) three counts of s*xual assault involving children
3) six counts of taking, making, or possessing indecent images of children
4) possessing an extreme p*rnographic image involving a s*x act on an animal.
