Neil Young is being sued by the luxury fashion brand Chrome Hearts for the usage of the name 'Chrome Hearts' in his new act, titled Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts. The luxury fashion brand is alleging that the name of Young's band is infringing on the brand's unique name.
A section of the lawsuit, which was filed on September 11, 2025, is quoted here from Billboard's article on the matter that was released on September 12, 2025:
"Defendants’ continued use of the confusingly similar [Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts] name in commerce violates Chrome Hearts’ valuable intellectual property rights...Defendants have intentionally and knowingly capitalized off of confusion between the Chrome Hearts [trademarks] and the NYTCH name."
A lawyer for the Chrome Hearts brand also talked about the lawsuit with the publication, stating:
"The likelihood of confusion is not merely hypothetical. Some clothing and apparel vendors have apparently already mistakenly assumed that there is a connection between NYTCH and Chrome Hearts, and are actively promoting [it.]"
The lawyer added:
"The Chrome Hearts brand has become iconic, especially in the fashion and music industries. And that was the intention. From the very beginning, the company placed special emphasis on promoting the Chrome Hearts brand among and with the help of musicians."
The lawsuit is demanding an immediate injunction to stop Young from using the name Chrome Hearts, as well as unspecified damages.
Under trademark law, as per the UpCounsel website, different companies/legal entities can have the same name, as long as there is no likelihood of confusion. This confusion is the Chrome Hearts fashion brand's case against Neil Young, who also has fashion items under the Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts band name.
However, it is to be noted that Young's band name is derived from his Long May You Run track, which was released in 1976. The Chrome Hearts fashion brand was founded years later in 1988. This makes Young the older of the two legal entities to have used the name. Neil Young has not responded to the lawsuit and its revelation to the public as of the writing of this article, at least not publicly.
