Bill Gates made a strong statement against Elon Musk on May 8, 2025. According to Microsoft's co-founder, Gates shared a few statements with the Financial Times, saying that Musk was "killing children" with the decision to cut down USAID. He also mentioned that he will be lending a helping hand by virtually donating an additional $200 billion through the Gates Foundation.

This is not the first time the billionaire has critiqued the Tesla mogul. This is what Bill Gates had to say about USAID getting cut by more than 80%:

"The picture of the world's richest man killing the world's poorest children is not a pretty one."

Gates also brought up the grants that the US government cut to Gaza and Mozambique. While the Tesla CEO claimed that the grants were for funding condoms, they were meant to help prevent the spread of HIV from mothers to babies. According to Gates' statement to the Financial Times:

"I'd love for him to go in and meet the children that have now been infected with HIV because he cut that money"

What is Bill Gates doing about the cuts being made by the Trump administration?

After the Trump administration announced the USAID cut, Bill Gates has promised to give away all of his "virtual wealth" through the Gates Foundation, as reported by The Financial Times. Since a huge chunk of the USAID is being cut off, Gates hopes that his contribution will help the foundation with its funding issues for at least two decades.

He also mentioned that the focus of his donation would go to promoting "child and maternal health," which would help them battle different infectious diseases and poverty.

What is USAID?

USAID is the abbreviated form for the United States Agency for International Development. It is a program that was introduced as an agency to consolidate foreign aid programs. It provides humanitarian and development assistance to those who are in need.

According to Oxfam:

"At least 23 million children stand to lose access to education, and as many as 95 million people would lose access to basic healthcare, potentially leading to more than 3 million preventable deaths per year."

USAID has, in the past, aided people economically, academically, as well as with food, healthcare, and during disasters. The foundation has offered aid since 1961.

Despite the rivalry between Bill Gates and Elon Musk, the former's response to the USAID cuts points to a larger issue.
