The Norway Chess 2025 tournament is currently underway, with past winners like Magnus Carlsen participating. The chess tournament began on Monday, May 26, 2025, in Stavanger, Norway, and is set to conclude on Friday, June 6, 2025. It has drawn much attention as the contestants begin the seventh round of the game following Gukesh's stunning win against Magnus in the sixth round.

In round six of the chess tournament, Gukesh Dommaraju secured a win against GM Magnus Carlsen, the 2025 representative of Norway. However, Gukesh turned the game around by capitalizing on a blunder made by Magnus Carlsen, who won the Norway Chess tournaments in 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2024, ultimately winning the round. Although Gukesh won the round, Magnus' position at the top remains undisturbed.

After the conclusion of round 6 of the Norway Chess 2025 competition, Magnus Carlsen still holds the first position. However, his first classical loss against Gukesh allows Fabiano Caruana to tie with him. At the end of round 6, Magnus and Fabiano had 9.5 points total, Gukesh came in third with 8.5, Arjun Erigaisi and Hikaru Nakamura came in fourth and fifth, respectively, with 7.5 points, and in sixth place was Wei Yi with 6.5 points.

During an interview, Magnus Carlsen was already optimistic about the game after stealing two wins from Gukesh. He said:

“I know that Gukesh is a very ambitious player, so I kinda figured he would go for something kind of optimistic here. I just don't completely understand what the concept is here. It seems to me that I just have excellent play.”

He added, predicting some of the upcoming moves his opponent might make:

“I can potentially open up play on the king side, and I’m doing all right on the queen side as well. Because of those pawn exchanges, I have counterplay down from the B file, and now you can come to F4, possibly Knight H7, or Knight G5 as well. It seems to me that I'm probably not better, but at least, practically speaking, it feels easier to play black. We’ll see what he comes with.”

Immediately after the interview, he continued the game with an almost perfect, precise play according to his prediction. Gukesh, however, prolonged the game and acted on a time scrabble mistake to win the game:

“I mean, it was not the way I wanted it to be, but okay, I'll take it,” Gukesh said after the game, pleased with his win.
