Sean Combs, also known as Diddy, has been under public scrutiny since lawsuits were filed against him in 2023.
Recently, on Friday, May 9, 2025, Diddy’s lawyers said that they plan to accuse Cassie Ventura, Diddy’s ex-girlfriend, of domestic violence when she takes the stand during the trial, as per Reuters.
Currently, Diddy has pleaded not guilty to two counts of transportation for prostitution, two counts of sex trafficking, and one count of racketeering. He has been in jail since his arrest in September 2024.
Diddy's legal team plans to accuse Cassie of domestic violence
Diddy's trial commenced on May 5, 2025, with jury selection, and the opening statements are scheduled to begin on May 12, 2025. Marc Agnifilo, Diddy’s lawyer, told the court on Friday that there was mutual domestic violence between Cassie and Diddy when they were in a relationship.
He also asked the judge to allow the team to present evidence to support their accusation. Diddy’s legal team argued that the “hitting” and behaviors from both sides contributed to the violence. He said:
''We are absolutely going to admit to domestic violence. But at what point does it become coercive?''
He further alleged that Cassie is a strong person and capable of physical confrontations, to which Judge Subramanian responded:
''Strong people can be coerced just like weak people, as per People.''
The judge also stated he would decide on Monday whether the evidence would be allowed. Cassie is the star witness for the prosecution, as she was one of the first to file a lawsuit against Diddy in November 2023. That case was followed by numerous other lawsuits. She had accused Diddy of r*pe, abuse, and s*xual assault.
Cassie’s allegations and the prosecutors’ case against Diddy
Cassie’s accusation gained further traction when CNN released video footage of Diddy hitting, dragging, and shoving her near an elevator in the lobby of the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles. The video, dated March 2016, matched her description in the 2023 lawsuit.
Prosecutors have alleged that Diddy used his fame and popularity to lure women into the industry by promising them careers or financial support. Once involved, the women were allegedly coerced into s*xual activities that often involved the use of drugs. They also claim that Diddy recorded these acts without consent.
The defense team argues that the activities were part of the music mogul’s “swinger lifestyle,” and that participants were willingly involved.
The jury of 12 New Yorkers will be finalized on Monday. After that, opening statements from the defense and prosecution will begin. As per Sky News, the trial is expected to last around eight weeks.
