Sean Diddy Combs's trial resumed on June 2, 2025, with the defense team’s cross-examination of a former assistant of Combs, identified by the pseudonym Mia. Mia, who worked for Combs from 2009 to 2017, had earlier testified on May 29, 2025, that the music executive had physically and sexually assaulted her when she worked for him.
She claimed that Diddy had manipulated her in a complicated work dynamic. Mia also alleged that she had witnessed Bad Boy Records physically assault his former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, several times.
Mia resumed her position on the stand, and defense lawyer Brian Steel questioned the witness about some of the text messages she had sent to Combs. Jurors were shown a text sent by Mia to her former boss in 2019, where she narrated a nightmare she had involving incarcerated R&B singer R. Kelly, convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering in 2022.
The text read:
"I had a nightmare. I was trapped in an elevator with R. Kelly, and you came to rescue me."
Steel proceeded to question Mia for sending such a text when she claimed Combs was harassing her:
"Why are you reaching out to Mr. Combs and telling him this?"
The witness responded that she felt the need to share such a dream because Combs’ wife, Kim Porter, had just passed, and she felt sorry for him:
"Puff used to be my protector. Kim had just passed away, and I felt horrible for him.”
Steel argued that the text came months after Kim Porter’s death:
"It's five months later, and you are having thoughts that he's your saviour, and you're sending him all the love in the world?"
Mia replied that it didn’t seem like a long time to her and maintained that Combs would grieve the late mother of his four children for a long time.
Prosecution questions Mia on the friendly text exchanged between her and Diddy after employment ended
In a May 29, 2025, testimony, a reportedly emotional Mia went through details of how Diddy sexually assaulted her. She claimed that the music mogul forced himself on her orally on one occasion and assaulted her in her room on another.
The former assistant told the court that she was scared of reporting Combs to the authorities because she was afraid that he would "fire me and ruin my future and somehow twist the story.”
On June 2, 2025, Brian Steel grilled Mia about a message she had sent to Combs in 2020, years after her employment with the latter ended, reminiscing about the “good times.” In the text, Mia reportedly mentioned having “so many funny memories” and warm moments with her former boss.
Combs had texted back:
"I love it. Glad you’re well,” adding, “I only remember the good times.”
To which Mia replied:
"Love you too, and the only things to remember are the good times, and those are the only ones I have.”
Steel quibbled that Mia, in light of her allegations against her former boss, should have mentioned “the bad times” too.
Mia responded that she couldn’t have replied to Combs’ text in an accusatory manner. Steel retorted that the reason why Mia never included a bad report in her texts was that the allegations against Diddy weren’t true.
Mia replied that she had not lied in her testimony to the court, and Combs brainwashed her, and she was constantly seeking his approval.
Sean Diddy Combs's trial began on May 5, 2025, and is expected to last 8 to 10 weeks. The music executive is charged with racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation for prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
