Why did Nicki Minaj threaten to cancel her album release?

Nicki Minaj canceled her highly anticipated new album, which was scheduled to be released next year, due to ongoing conflict with Roc Nation and its CEO, Desiree Perez, as well as Jay-Z.

In a tweet shared on October 15, 2025, Minaj wrote:

“They came BEGGING the QUEEN for a tour & album & I said NOPE!!!!! LMFAO. Wanted to patch it up. They needed help from the QUEEN & the BARBZ. I called the Barbz on the secret BARB phone & it was a resounding NOOOOOOOO. just like the casinooooooooooooooooooo. @sc.”

In her second tweet, Minaj added that she has canceled her plans to release her album. Tagging Jay-Z, she wrote in her tweet:

“Ok I’m not going to put out the album anymore. No more music. Hope you’re happy now @sc Bye, Barbz. Love you for life.”

Upon hearing the news, the Barbz were highly disappointed and requested that Nicki Minaj listen to their concerns. A user wrote:

“Onika please… listen to us, the Barbz. listen to us pleaseee. we need you mother, now than ever.”

Another user requested her to take a break from social media. They said:

“Nicki, take a break from social media and heal, you’ve got a lot going on. You went from being the bully to playing the victim. Sometimes silence says more than tweets ever will.”

Nicki Minaj’s last album, Pink Friday 2, was released on December 8, 2023, through Republic Records. Reportedly, the feud between the Anaconda singer and Roc Nation stems from claims that she is owed between $100 million and $ 200 million related to her stake in Tidal. It is a music streaming platform initiated by Jay-Z.

The singer was one of the founding partners granted equity in Tidal in 2015 in exchange for exclusive content and promotion. Nicki Minaj, along with Beyoncé, Rihanna, J. Cole, and Ye, was gifted a three percent stake in Tidal, valued at $56 million.

In 2021, Tidal was sold to Square for $297 million. The rapper shared that she was offered only a million for her share of the company, which she indicated was far below what she believed she was rightfully owed.
